Dear Editor:
I must strenuously disagree with Mr Menke's letter about the Ukraine war. None of his points are worth going to war over and expending our valuable resources and causing so much destruction and bloodshed.

Dear Editor:
I must strenuously disagree with Mr Menke's letter about the Ukraine war. None of his points are worth going to war over and expending our valuable resources and causing so much destruction and bloodshed.
The US has absolutely no strategic interest in the two stated issues for which Russia began this conflict. The precipitating issue concerned Ukraine joining NATO. Russia made it clear for many years that it did not want Ukraine in NATO. There's no reason we can't or shouldn't honor that desire. We want our own buffer zones in the countries around us. It's just not a big deal for the US security whether Ukraine is in NATO or not. But it is for Russia.
Secondly, the very limited area of the Donbas has become the other issue. What do we care if Russia annexes the Donbas at this point? They're not going to go into Poland and Germany and try to conquer France. The Russian economy is the size of Italy. They can't even conquer Ukraine. And they've never stated any imperial intentions beyond the Donbas.
Meanwhile, the United States has wasted $74.4 billion and much of our ammunition and armaments on a fruitless, wasteful, meaningless war. Just read or listen to anything by John Mearsheimer, professor at the University of Chicago, to understand the full historical and geopolitical meaning of this misguided policy.
This incredibly stupid war could be ended in two weeks if we insist that Ukraine negotiates these issues. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians have been killed and much of their economy and infrastructure has been ruined. This is truly one of, if not the most useless, destructive policies of the Biden administration and it has caused untold suffering. The blame for this very painful bloodletting is clearly at the feet of Joe Biden for encouraging Ukraine to join NATO in the first place and provoking Russia.
Sincerely,
Thomas Thornton
