Ross Harvin is a Republican candidate running for State Senate District 47. Read his response to the Mainstreet Newspapers candidate questionnaire below:
If you are the challenger, or running for an open seat, what do you hope to accomplish if elected to this position? What would you do differently from what’s being done now or in the past?
I hope to return this senate seat back to the people of the 47th District, when elected I will work to end the state income tax and serve with unquestionable integrity. I will vote and work on behalf of the district not the Atlanta lobbyist machine. I will advocate for infrastructure improvements throughout the district to ease our current traffic issues. I also plan to prepare legislation to establish term limits on state legislators. It is my hope to help empower the vanishing middle class.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I believe as many voters do that serving in office is not a career but a season of life. One may argue that seniority has its privileges in the general assembly, but those privileges are erased when you have dozens of ethics complaints filed against you. I vow to serve with integrity and Christian conservative values. When elected I will be your voice in the state senate and fight for the issues that matter to you, your family, and the citizens of the 47th District. As a father of four children, I face the same struggles you face every day. The government exists to serve you and should always be working to promote a better quality of life for individuals and not large corporations. As a combat veteran, I am well versed in leadership and understand that protecting those you serve is of the utmost importance.
What is the most important issue you see that involves the position you are running for?
Integrity, service, and transparency. To serve the people one must always strive to maintain their integrity and be completely transparent with the constituents, so that they truly understand and are aware of what is happening at the capitol. No elected official should financially gain from their position, unfortunately we see this too often. The phrase “It may be unethical, but it’s not illegal” should never be used again when describing our politicians’ actions. I will personally work to see that tougher ethics reforms are put in place to put a stop to elected officials taking advantage of their positions.
Tell voters a little about yourself and your background:
First and foremost, I am a Christian, husband, and a father to four amazing children. I work as a small businessman in the land surveying industry, and I have served our country for nearly 20 years in the Marine Corps. I am a combat veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and currently hold the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. My wife Amanda and my four children are proud to call the 47th district home and I look forward to serving you.
What is your position on the state’s access for abortion? Should it be expanded to 15 weeks or have more restrictions? What is your position on abortions in medical cases where doctors say it is necessary for the life or health of the mother?
I stand by the current law commonly referred to as the “Heartbeat Bill”. Medical cases are also already covered in the law defining exceptions.
Do you believe voting and elections in Georgia are accurate and fair?
Many voters throughout Georgia have had concerns and still do regarding elections, if elected it is my duty to listen to those concerns and ensure citizens of the 47th district have trust and confidence in elections. That means exploring every option to include paper ballots.
