Barrow school leaders to discuss possible uniforms

Barrow County’s newly-created cluster governance teams will in March for the second time this school year and among their topics will be the possible move toward school uniforms. School superintendent Wanda Creel and Chris Griner, director of business services, have also created a video for these meetings which will cover budgeting information. Griner told the board the video focuses mainly on the FY2012 budgeting process.

Apalchee High School's CGT will meet March 14 at 4:30 p.m. and Winder-Barrow High School's CGT will meet at 4:30 p.m. on March 15.

I don't agree with this your child should not be made to wear a uniform .This needs to be voted on by parents .

yea. people shouldn't have to wear uniforms to work either. I think police officers should be allowed to wear blue jeans. At least they should vote if they should.

The Police do not have to pay for the uniforms. The parents would have to pay for children uniforms. How is this better? Higher prices due to the School choosing the supplier and no freedom of choice? Freedom is that not why the US left England in the first place?

Officers, indeed pay for much of their uniforms and equipment. And if you have to buy your kid a uniform that's one less pair of Abercrombie and Fitch jeans you have to put out for....sounds like a saving to me! And yes....I have a student at WBHS.

I agree the parents needs to have a say and a vote.I will acutally vote for uniform.Its just easy to me to buy her uniform for the week to wear to school,plus all the kids will have uniform and no issue about who has the fancy shirt or the nice pants.

Well maybe if you only have 1 child to buy for it might be easier for you, but, what if you have 3 children to buy for. Do you really think it is cheaper to buy for more kids than it is to use what you already have or hand me downs?? This is crazy, let the kids wear their clothes they have and if someone has a problem with what other kids wear, then explain why they can't have it too.

It will actually be less stress ful on us mothers trying to figure what to buy for school what would my child want to wear the next day ..And nowI do not have to hear" how the other kids are wearing this and why can't I wear it.."BTW.Walmart has uniform tops on clearance for only 2.99 Navy Blue..Buy 5 and it will come out to 14.95..

Plenty of Big city has apply this system...and if the family has low income the state provide free uniform..In Charter School you need uniforms ..As long as my child is getting a good education I do not care if they need to wear uniforms..

It's a really good idea to have the kids ware uniforms.. No one will bully anyone for not being up to date on the lastes trends.. Plus it will safe us lots of money :) I will vote for it!!!

Something else the school system trying to do Barrow County School system should not be able to tell me what my child can wear .I am sorry I don't agree with this .Why change it now ? I am so tired of people telling me how to raise my child .If this passes my child will be removed from school .

No one is telling you how to raise your child.But if you join a team you need to wear their uniform ,what you going to tell the coach ?/ Sorry do not tell me what my child could wear? or when your child is a teenager and wants a job in Target?...I do not see how implying uniform is telling you how to raise your child..How about getting your child used to wearing uniform so in the future if he joins a Army or even a simple Job as Publix he/she has to wear a uniform..

If this passes, your child will be removed from school? Well, I hate to tell you this, aside from home-schooling, your child will HAVE to go to school. Being that you live in Barrow County, your child will have to stay within the county. Another option would be to enroll them in a private school, in which....you guessed it, they have to wear UNIFORMS. Geez, people, get a grip!

I wore a uniform in school, and I see the merit in doing so. Uniforms teach discipline, respect, and eliminate gang "colors". Barrow schools would be taking a step in the right direction by requiring uniforms.

A step toward fascism is what uniforms are. Do it up right: Make them brown and adorned with a swastika. I never wore a uniform in school or anywhere else. And I never will.

How many of you have actually been to the school for any amount of time to see what the kids are wearing??? I haven't been out of school all that long and wouldn't have said this when I was in school(in Barrow County by the way), but uniforms are needed!! No more pants on the ground, no more short skirts, no more tight tops, you get distracted by that, trust me!!!! People talk so bad about Barrow County schools and how it's bad teachers and all, grow up, it's the parenting!! Withdraw your kids, school is probably better off without them, or start parenting and making your kids do the right thing instead of them telling you what to do!! I can guarantee school performance would drastically improve with uniforms!!

Sadly I've seen some kids with holes in their shirt,stain ,shoes that is way to tight.and I have seen how cruel kids can be.If all have uniforms then this will be some thing less that kids have to deal with..And if parents can not afford them,I be willing to start a drive to donate school uniforms and I bet that "Barrow Journal"will be more and willing to help with the drive.I will call channel 11 alive too...

it was not her idea, actually several BOE members I have spoke to have all been in favor of having some sort of school attire for over a year after my nephew was being bullied for not having the latest and greates attire.
I asked a few of them after the last elections and two recently about uniforms. It would reduce the morning dressing issues for students/parents and just like in the work place, you dress nice, you will be respected, you dress like a hoodlum or trash, you will be treated like so

After reading most of these posts, it is quite obvious why this country will never survive as a free society. We can't get to socialism fast enouth for some of you.

The way I read it from these posts is: Easy for parents to buy clothes, baggy pants, morning dressing issues, cheaper clothes, can't figure out what to buy, eliminate dirty clothes and holes and on and on and on. Well guess what. That's part of parenting. Take responsibility and raise your kids.

You're so willing to give up your freedon and your childs individuality and turn it over to the government...as a matter of fact, you should be arrested for child abuse for putting your kids in the hands of government socialists.

Yup, not much time left. But, then again, who cares...right? Government will handle it and I won't have to do anything because government has already done all the thinking for me.

Really well the truth is too many want thier kid to be the number one, the most popular the standout, later in life if they peak in grade school or high school they are lost in the real world where being ones self is not what people like people like being around people that act and behave the same, rather then around the one that stands apart, even though people love Cheese the cheese stands alone!

I think this is a great idea. I just wish they had instituted a uniform policy when my kids were in school. There have been studies done which indicate that school uniforms have a positive effect on academic performance and improvement in school discipline.
If, as someone commented, more kids will drop out of H.S. if this policy is put into place; it seems to me if a kid drops out because they don't agree with a dress code, they aren't there to learn anyway. In addition, they are going to have a very difficult time in the Real World.

If the students have to wear uniforms so should every employee - teacher, admimistrator, etc. What is good for one is good for another. And I also have a student in the school system. However I don't go and buy the expensive clothing. MY child gets what I can afford and sometimes goes w/o!!!! So if having to buy uniforms is more expensive then what I spend on regular clothing then I say no.

I think the students wearing uniforms is a good idea. You want to talk about how some of the Asian schools do it and how that will turn us in to them....have you even bothered to look at the success rate their schools have? I also wouldn't mind (as a teacher) wearing a uniform to school. Schools aren't a fashion runway. Students are there to learn and teachers are there to teach. Without so much focus on clothes, maybe both would happen.

As a teacher, I fully endorse the idea of uniforms. It cuts down on distractions significantly and in some respects could decrease bullying by at least a small amount. I see people commenting about increased drop outs if we implemented uniforms. If these kids dropped out because of that, I hate to tell you, they were probably already going to drop out. Work ethic, discipline, and pride are what you need for success, not more expensive clothes than your classmates.

I have three teens in WBH & trust the system to make the right choice. If they want to try this then I am all for it. It is a step toward helping our kids have a better school.

First off I don't agree with public schools going to uniforms....most people like me cannot afford it....and don't tell me b/c I have a computer that I can b/c you don't know each persons financial situation. 95% of my kids clothing are hand-me-downs....free is much different from uniforms. I also do not believe that the children will like this at all - if they hate school now - they will totally hate it if made to wear uniforms. Teaching them to be respectful begins at home - they will pick on kids no matter what they have on as clothes - they will be picked on for the hair, shoes, etc.....we as parents are to teach our children to be respectful and kind to others. NO to uniforms and I am starting a petition.

With the warm weather I have seen some of my other female students pull out clothes for summer. I am so tried of seeing girls with there backsides hanging out. I'm also tried of having to look at men's underwear. I hope it passes, I wish I would still be around to see the students show there bodies some respect. I'm sorry if you don't like the idea of uniforms, your children refuse to follow the dress code. So sorry if you don't like it, feel free to leave the school system. Maybe then we can learn something in the classroom.

I had a Barrow education, and I know the difference between "there" and "their." So, don't use your poor pitiful Barrow education as an alibi for your ignorance. Sometime in the future you might realize that there is a correlation between what you put into your education and what you get out of it. I know smart people that have a degree from UGA, and I know some dumb sorrostitutes for whom the memory of Athens is a blurred party lasting for 4 years. But, hey, you're at the age where you think you know it all.

I am sorry you feel this way but my children in elementary school do not have anything hanging out or showing anything anywhere.....and they do learn in class - I pay my taxes and my children should not have to leave the school system due to others who break the dress code or because I do not feel that we should go to uniforms in public school.

BOTTOM LINE.... Uniforms in school would be a great prepratory for the real world of business where most companies would require a reasomable dress code. Some even require suits for the men and approiate business dress for the women.. DUH!! As a previous coment said .... check out even Wal-Mart and Target. No slumming there!!!

First off - in todays world the people working grew up mostly in public schools wearing the clothes they picked out and I don't feel that they have any problem dressing for the job they picked....second - my husband has to wear uniforms and they are provided to him....no cost.....so maybe the school should buy them for the kids but I feel that if the school system is going to do something good then they need to give teachers a raise for the hard work they put in.....not to sit and worry about what my child is wearing.

I agree with uniforms, however I believe the females should have a choice of uniform shorts, skirts or pants and the boys should have a choice between uniform pants and or shorts.
Having females wearing uniform skirts constantly could cause some problems for the females

FYI - the kids who attend the alternative schools are required to wear uniforms. I don't see an issue with this. Most private schools have uniforms. This will help out the beginning of the school days for teachers/administrators so that they won't have to perform a "dress code check". Make it a white collared shirt, and khaki pants/skirt/shorts. They are cheap everywhere, including Goodwill.
