A 17-year-old Statham youth was killed Saturday morning when he was hit by an oncoming CSX train just outside the city limits. But exactly what happened isn’t yet clear.

A report from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said Joshua Whiten may have been walking on the tracks at the time of the incident while listening to music. [Full Story »] 

A Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a wreck Monday afternoon as he traveled to his Barrow County home on a motorcycle. [Full Story »] 

A Statham woman was killed and a Buford man was seriously injured Monday in a two-vehicle wreck on Ga. Hwy. 316 at Barber Creek Road.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said the deceased victim was Betty Jane Wheeler, 77, of Statham. The injured driver of the second car was Justin Craig Stephens of Buford. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A three-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Yargo Elementary School sent several people to area hospitals. One of the vehicles involved was a van reportedly transporting children.

A 41-year-old Winder man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a motorcycle accident around 2 p.m. on Georgia Highway 8 (Atlanta Highway) near the Bankhead Highway crossing, according to a report from the Athens post of the Georgia State Patrol. [Full Story »] 

The son of BarrowJournal.com web editor Kristi Reed was seriously injured in a car wreck Wednesday evening while driving home from football practice at Mill Creek High School.

Alex Reed remains in critical condition at Grady Hospital, where he was airlifted after the wreck. He underwent surgery on Friday.

"This is a great tragedy and we're all very concerned about Alex, Kristi and the Reed family," said co-publisher Mike Buffington of Mainstreet Newspapers, Inc. "We ask that everyone continue to keep this family in its prayers."

MCHS held a moment of silence for Alex at its football game Friday night according to the Gwinnett Daily Post (here).
