BRIDGES: Choice always important at election time

Choice is a good thing, especially at the voting booth.

Barrow County voters will have some choices to make when they vote in the Nov. 6 general election. (Early voting began Monday so the election is officially here.)
There will be a choice on the ballot for sheriff between incumbent Jud Smith and challenger James Scott. Some political observers locally don’t foresee the race being close. Regardless, voters have a choice and that is good. On a side note, this is really one of those elected offices which should be non-partisan.

Incumbent Steve Worley faces a challenge for his seat on the Board of Commissioners from Johnny Smith, a former commissioner, who is seeking to return to the BOC. Once again, voters have a choice and that can only be viewed as a positive thing. [Full Story »] 

How to vote in the Nov. 8 elections

No matter where you live in Barrow County, you can vote in the countywide special election in the following ways:

• VOTE EARLY: Go in person to the Barrow County Board of Elections & Registration Office at 233 E. Broad St. from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. any weekday between now and Nov. 4. An early voting location has been set up inside a training room nearby. Follow the signs.

• VOTE ABSENTEE: Request an absentee ballot from the Barrow County Board of Elections & Registration by calling 770-307-3110. The ballot will be sent to you by mail. You must request it no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, and the elections office must receive it before the polls close on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Barrow County elections supervisor resigns

For the second time in less than two years, Barrow County is losing its elections supervisor.

Katie Ferm, who has been in the post since March 2010, submitted her resignation Monday and said she is leaving for personal reasons. Her final day is July 29.

Ferm, 32, is following in the footsteps of her former Barrow County supervisor, Kristi Royston, who resigned in December 2009 to become Gwinnett County’s deputy director of Elections and Voter Registration. Ferm will be the elections coordinator in that same office and will report to Royston.

She is leaving her post just after completing the preliminary remapping of Barrow County’s election districts. A public hearing on two proposed maps will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday just before the regular meeting of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners. The BOC is scheduled to take action on the maps that night.

Barrow voters approve SPLOST renewal

In a vote with high stakes for local governments but low voter turnout, the few Barrow County residents who did take the time to go to the polls today gave overwhelming support to the six-year renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Only 3.5 percent of the county's 34,598 registered voters participated in the single-issue special election. They voted by a margin of 4:1 to extend the 1-percent local-government sales tax from July 1, 2012-June 30, 2018.

With the "Yes" votes outnumbering the "No" votes at all 16 of the county's polling places, the countywide vote was 959 (80.12%) to 238 (19.88%). Four provisional ballots also were cast, but the Barrow County Board of Elections and Registration will not decide until Friday whether to allow them to be included in the final tally. Several questions on November ballot

Several amendments to Georgia’s constitution are on the November ballot. These amendments cover topics ranging from business contracts to trauma care. This year’s ballot also includes a statewide referendum relating to taxation of business inventories.

COMPETITIVE CONTRACTS

Constitutional amendment 1 relates to non-competition contracts executed between employees and their employers, partnerships and partners and others. Specifically, the ballot question asks “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to make Georgia more economically competitive by authorizing legislation to uphold reasonable competitive agreements?”

If passed, this amendment would allow the courts to not only enforce contracts that reasonably restrict competition during or after the term of employment, but would also allow the courts to modify contracts “to achieve the intent of the contracting parties.” Examples of contracts covered under this amendment would include those that prevent an employee from competing with an employer after termination of employment and agreements by sellers not to compete with a seller’s customer. The countdown to the primary election has now moved under a week.

Candidates have been on the stump for months now doing their best to get their message to connect with voters. Of course, money plays a big part in all this. The more money a candidate has, the better chance his or her message is going to reach voters. [Full Story »]

Candidate qualifying for municipal elections ends today

Today is the last day for candidates to qualify to run in the Nov. 3 municipal elections around Barrow County.

The city of Statham has had an absolute crush of candidates. The eighth one, Betty Kinney, walked through the door of city hall this morning while city clerk Susan Gabriel was talking on the phone with a reporter. The other qualifiers include incumbents Betty Lyle and Gayle Steed and challengers Jeremiah Bennett, Johnnie Ellington, David Huth, Susan Martin and Terry Tripp.

Fourteen miles to the west, however, the town of Carl didn’t have a single council candidate qualify by the end of its qualifying period at 5 p.m. Thursday. Mayor David Brock, who did qualify to run again for his post, hung around town hall for a half hour after the building closed, but no one showed up.

In many ways it did my ever aging heart good to see average citizens rally for a cause, any cause, last week.

Americans, by nature, are lazy, especially when it comes to politics. It happens to all of us. We get too accustomed to the good life. I’ve long said most people don’t follow politics enough. Many can’t tell you when the next election is much less tell you who is running for office.
