City of Statham officals will look to an “opportunity zone” to help provide sewer service to McCarty Trailer Park.
“This section has low to medium income citizens,” said Statham mayor Robert Bridges. “We need to provide sewer to this location and we have been told we can receive grant money for it.”
Engineering Management Incorporated of Lawrenceville has provided an estimated cost of $5,500 to help with the project. This would include a re-development plan, public hearings and plan, ordinance and resolution adoption.

Train slams 18-wheeler in downtown Statham
At 11:15 a.m. Friday in downtown Statham, a CSX train slammed into a loaded 18-wheeler flat-bed truck carrying antique cars, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
No one was injured, but the incident occurred at the city's main intersection of Jefferson Road and Hwy. 8, creating a major traffic problem downtown.
"The train was heading eastbound toward Athens and hit the truck which was stuck on tracks," Smith said. "It dragged the truck several hundred feet."

Statham vehicle use policy reviewed
Statham reviewed its vehicle use policy at its meeting last Tuesday.
It was decided that allowing vehicles to be driven to and from work will be left up to the mayor and council’s discretion. Examples when it would be appropriate are as follows:
•managerial employees Whose personal use of a city-owned vehicle is consistent with the requirements of the position.
•employees Who are subject to hour call out or have job responsibilities requiring highly irregular work hours.
•duty vehicles designed or equipped for high priority response where response time will be enhanced by allowing the vehicle to remain in custody of individual employee. Employees assigned to duty vehicles which are taken home must be available to respond upon request on a 24-hour basis any time the employee has custody of the vehicle.
