What do you usually say to folks you meet? Hello? Hi, how are you? Yo, Homey?

How we greet other people may depend, in part, upon the occasion. A smile with a warm “hello” at the grocery store to someone you’ve never before met can really make the day of one who was feeling pretty invisible up to that point. We never know what relationship may be forthcoming from a simple “how are you?” to a complete stranger. The first words spoken between two people can set the tone for an entire conversation, as well as begin cementing a critical partnership among co-workers or lay the foundation for cultivating the trust upon which solid relationships must be built. It was sometime in 1988 when I discovered the man known as Ludlow Porch.

An experiment of placing my radio on the AM dial (unheard of for teenagers then or now) led to my hearing his talk radio show on WSB (the 750 side). An interest in talk radio was forming and Ludlow’s unique brand of humor was a show which caught my attention more than most. [Full Story »]

The flap over a state agency slapping at a Barrow County engineer for some recent road work is much ado about nothing.

Barrow engineering department manager Darrell Greeson recently got a letter from the Georgia Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors demanding that he stop doing engineering work.

The group based that demand on an unidentified source who knew about the recent turn lane work at Hwy. 211 and Barrow Park Drive, which had been the site of a number of wrecks.

Ever rented or went to the movies and expected to see A Golden Globe winning flick but instead saw a film even Rotten Tomatoes wouldn’t touch? I think we’ve all been there before.

Being a fan of the horror genre, I can say that I have seen my fair share of corny, cheesy films in my 17 years. In a way, there is something beautiful behind that putrid pile of manure. It’s an interesting phenomenon. [Full Story »]

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the county commission in action, but I went to the meeting on Jan. 31 to see how the latest airport authority hoopla would fall out. At issue was chairman Danny Yearwood’s veto of commissioner Ben Hendrix’s re-appointment of Don Holliday to the authority.

There’s been a lot of “he said, she said” floating around about the chairman’s veto being personal, not political, and about how Holliday’s going to bring commercial airlines and big freight planes to the airport, so I thought it might be an interesting meeting; I was right. [Full Story »]

Now that the holidays are over, visiting relatives are gone, and we are overcoming two back-to-back illnesses, I think (I hope) I can finally begin to think about a regular routine. One thing I have been intending to do is think more about how I want to homeschool. So maybe it doesn’t matter that Barrow County Board of Commissioners chairman Danny Yearwood vetoed the BOC’s recent reappointment of Don Holliday to the airport authority. It appears unlikely anyone on the board is going to challenge that in a legal arena.

But there is an important issue at stake here and that is to figure out just what is the balance of power on the BOC? [Full Story »]

An old college buddy of mine showed he was a lot braver than me years ago when he ventured to the Northern section of our great country after we both finished our journalism studies.

My friend was always up for any challenge and moving to Minnesota after being a lifelong Southerner didn’t seem to faze him in the least. In fact, he relished the challenge. [Full Story »]
