Dear Editor:
The Sept. 23 issue of the Barrow Journal reported the story of a 78-year-old Barrow county woman who was investigated and ordered out of her home by agents of the Department of Homeland Security for remarks that she made to an FCC employee concerning her digital television converter box.
Annoyed with the poor reception on her TV, she joked with the FCC employee that she’d like to “shoot the son-of-a-gun that messed up my damned television.” Her remarks sound a lot like the remarks that my own grandmother might have made if she had been in a similar situation.

LETTER: Yearwood has 'shaken up' government
Dear Editor,
Barrow county commission chairman Danny Yearwood has done exactly what I expected him to do when I voted for him. He has shaken up Barrow county government.
I don’t know Mr. Yearwood, but I have met and spoken with him and I do believe that he has the best interest of Barrow County at heart. He has been criticized for not replacing managers and administrators that have resigned. I’m willing to bet that the same folks that are critical of those decisions would be among the first to cry foul if he had asked the commissioners to increase the millage rate in order to pay those salaries. Dear Editor:
After reading about the ongoing discussion the past couple of months concerning the state of disrepair the newly constructed Winder-Barrow High School athletic fieldhouse is in, I must say I find this entire saga to be a disgrace.
It is ridiculous for a newly constructed facility, which cost as much as this one did to construct, is already in need of numerous repairs. [Full Story »]

LETTER: Punishing a victimless crime
Dear Editor,
On April 11, Barrow county narcotics investigators raided a Statham home and “busted” a 55-year-old resident for manufacturing marijuana.
I feel safer already. Another deviant criminal is off the street. [Full Story »]

LETTER: Forget the working man: Bonuses were legal
My reaction to Chris Bridges’ column in the March 25 issue (“Something has to change soon”) about bonuses paid to some AIG employees was one of consternation.
That is not unusual for me when I encounter a liberal’s thought processes. I am sure Bridges will cling to his misconceptions, but since he tried to foist them onto his readers I wanted the opportunity to pass along some information the media has chosen to ignore. [Full Story »]
