A Bethlehem man has been charged with setting fire to his mother’s house. According to investigators, 29-year-old Charles Scott Mason resided at the house on Gifton Thomas Road with his mother and just before 8 p.m. on April 2 set a fire that caused extensive fire and water damage.

Winder couple arrested for online prostitution

A local couple was arrested Friday night for allegedly using the Craigslist Internet site for online prostitution.

After receiving several tips on the Winder Police Department’s anonymous tip line, an undercover officer made contact with the woman, who called herself “Miss Red” online, according to a police department press release.

The officer went to the woman’s home in the 300 block of Cedar Valley Trail in Winder and after striking a deal, notified Winder officers and Barrow County sheriff’s deputies, who arrived at the house and made the arrests.

Elizabeth C. McCannon was charged with prostitution and with keeping a place of prostitution.

Her husband, Richard McCannon, was charged with being a party to the crime of prostitution, being a party to the crime of keeping a place of prostitution, and pimping.

A Bethlehem couple that held an underage drinking party for local high school students last Friday night is facing a host of criminal charges after one of the partygoers ended up in a hospital intensive care unit with alcohol poisoning.

The 18-year-old girl was dropped off, unconscious, at Barrow Regional Medical Center in the early morning hours of Saturday. According to a sheriff’s report, she was “totally unresponsive” and was receiving medical support to prevent brain damage or death. [Full Story »] 

Former business owner, son face fraud charges

A former Winder businessman and his son were arrested last week for allegedly conspiring to commit insurance fraud. Leonard Monroe McCoy Jr., 52, who until recently owned My Heating & Air Guy Inc. at 165 W. Athens St. in Winder, and Michael Leonard McCoy, 26, of Jacksonville, Fla., turned themselves in at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office on March 18, nine days after warrants were issued for their arrests. According to the sheriff’s office, they were each released on a $25,000 bond. [Full Story »]

A 22-year-old Marine from Winder has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a disabled North Carolina woman who was the mother of another Marine. Dorreous Arsenio Brooks, 19, of 426 Northridge Lane in Winder was arrested by Winder Police after being found with marijuana. Brooks had a sufficient quantity of marijuana to be charged with possession with intent to distribute. Brooks faces additional charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of government housing, probation violation and aggravated assault. [Full Story »]
