News Policies
1. Weddings & Engagement Announcements:
Wedding announcements will be published for free up to 500 words and include a free photo. Engagement announcements will be published for free up to 300 words and include a free photo. For longer engagement or wedding announcements over the word limit a charge of 10 cents per additional word will be charged.
Both wedding and engagement announcements are for current or former residents of Barrow County, or the son or daughter of current or former residents of Barrow County. Wedding announcements of grandchildren who have never lived in Barrow County will be published at a rate of 10 cents per word.
Engagement announcements should generally be turned in around 6-12 weeks prior to the wedding date. Engagements will be published in the next available issue of the Barrow Journal.
Wedding announcements should be turned in within 12 weeks of the wedding and will be published in the next available issue of the Barrow Journal. Weddings submitted after 12 weeks will be charged at a rate of 10 cents per word.

Photos: High quality photos may be submitted with both engagement and wedding announcements. These may be submitted as prints in person or by mail, or via email as a digital photo file. Do not embed photos inside text-writing software; attach photos to emails as a jpg or a similar file. For best quality, photos should be well-lit with no shadows across the face from a hat or other object. If you want photos returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope or come by our office after publication. Submit photos at the same time as your announcement.
Among information to write about in an engagement or wedding announcement include the full names of bride and groom and where they reside; parent and grandparent names and where each lives; a description of the bride and groom’s current or recent education, military and/or employment location; the date, time and location of the wedding and whether it is an open invitation or closed wedding; the name of the person officiating at the wedding; groom and bride attendants if any; honeymoon location; and the name, phone number and email address of the person submitting the information in case we have a question about it.
Information on parties, showers, etc. related to the wedding or engagement should be included in the announcement itself and not as separate articles.
Any fees due have to be paid in full prior to publication.

All announcements are subject to editing for consistency and clarity.
2. Obituaries
Obituaries will be published for free in the Barrow Journal if the person is, or has been in the past, a resident of Barrow County, works in Barrow County now or did in the past, or is a public official whose district includes all or part of Barrow County.
A photo of the deceased will also be published for free if the obituary meets the above requirements.
If the deceased does not meet the above requirements, but has a close relative in Barrow County, a shorter death notice will be published for free.
Free obituaries may include full name, age, location of death, cause of death, where born, parents names, occupation, memberships in churches, civic clubs, etc., military service, names of survivors but not the names of grandchildren, what funeral home is handling arrangements, date, time and location of receiving, date and time of funeral, location of burial, officiating party and pallbearers.
For all other obituaries that do not meet the above requirements, or for additional information beyond what’s included, a paid obituary may be published for 15 cents per word plus $5 for any photograph.
Obituaries are generally submitted through a funeral home or other official source and edited by the newspaper. Where families disagree on the naming of stepchildren or other matters, what is submitted by the funeral home will be what is published. If other family members or friends wish to publish a paid obituary with additional information, they may do so by submitting the information directly to the newspaper and paying the 15 cents per word fee.

Funeral homes may submit obituaries via fax at 678.425.1435 or via email at obituaries@barrowjournal.com. Attach photos as separate JPG or similar digital files.
3. Birth Announcements
Birth announcements with photo will be published for free in the Barrow Journal for families currently residing in Barrow County.
Birth announcements may include the name, gender, weight, date of birth and location of birth the name of parents and where the parents live. Announcements may also include the names and ages of siblings and grandparents.
A contact name and phone number must be submitted. Both parents must sign agreeing to the publication of their name as a parent.
Standard birth announcement forms are available at our office at 77 East May Street, Winder and on our website at www.BarrowJournal.com under “Forms.”
4. Church News Announcements
Church news announcements of special events will be published for free unless the announcement is commercial in nature.
Church announcements should include the name and location of the church and the type of event (singing, revival, special service, etc.); the date and time of the event; the name of any special speakers or groups; and the name and phone number for further information.
Churches making announcements should be located in Barrow County. For churches outside Barrow County, items will be published on a space-available basis.

5. School, Civic, Business, Libraries and Volunteer Group Announcements
General news information or announcements from local schools, civic organizations, businesses or other groups or organizations may be submitted for publication.
Photos may be attached to this information for possible publication as well. Photos should be of high resolution for publication. People in the photos should be identified by first and last name from left to right from the front row to the back.
Business announcements will be subject to editor approval and should be of a general news and non-commercial nature. New businesses will have one grand opening or ribbon cutting photo; other events must be handled as paid advertising.
Teachers, media center personnel or others in local schools may submit class news, honor rolls and photos via email to schools@barrowjournal.com. Likewise, school clubs, such as 4-H, FFA, etc. may also submit news and photos of their events at this email address.
Colleges and technical schools may submit their graduation and Dean’s List information to schools@barrowjournal.com.
Hobby clubs, civic clubs and other community and volunteer organizations may submit their news via email at news@barrowjournal.com.
From time to time, reporters from the Barrow Journal may cover school, civic, business or other community groups for a feature story. If you have a story idea that you think might be of interest to the community, contact the Barrow Journal and let us know.
Photos from local non-profit beauty pageants, such as at schools and festivals, will be published for free; commercial and for-profit pageant photos will be considered paid advertising and not published for free.
6. Journal on Vacation Photos
The Barrow Journal will publish for free photos of current Barrow County residents who take a copy of the Barrow Journal on vacation and make a photo of themselves holding the Barrow Journal while on the trip.
Those in the photos should be clearly identified, along with the location and date of the trip and the name, address and phone number of the person submitting the photo. The Barrow Journal must be visible in the photo.
To qualify, vacation trips should be more than 100 miles from Barrow County.
Please submit high quality snapshots for best reproduction.
Photos will be published on a space available basis.
Photos and information about the photos may be emailed to photos@barrowjournal.com, or dropped by our office at 77 East May Street, Winder.
FOR A LIMITED TIME, the Barrow Journal will give a free 6-month newspaper subscription to those who submit a “Journal on Vacation” photo (Barrow County residents only.)
7. Letters to The Editor
The Barrow Journal will accept letters to the editor where readers wish to discuss current local, state or national events. The deadline for letters to the editor is 5 p.m. Monday for that week’s publication.
Letters should be addressed to the editor and not to third parties.
Letters should be brief, less than 500 words.
All letters must have the name of the person writing it, their address and contact information, such as a phone number and email address. That information will not be published.
Letters to thank a long list of businesses or people who donate to a cause will not be published. General letters thanking people for support of a cause are fine, but listing individual donors cannot be accommodated.
Crude or vulgar language should not be used in a letter to the editor. Writers should also refrain from making criminal accusations against anyone unless that person has been charged with a crime in the courts.
Letters that simply cut and paste email content, or content from websites, will be rejected. Letters should express the thoughts of the writer, not of someone else.
Letters should not employ quotations from religious texts to sermonize.
During election seasons, letters endorsing or criticizing individual candidates will not be published. Those wishing to engage in political advertising for or against a candidate may purchase space for such content. Writers are free to discuss or debate issues.
All letters are subject to editing for length and clarity.

When typing letters, please do not use all caps or multiple exclamation marks. Please do punctuate sentences.
8. Recreation/Sports News
With the multitude of local school and recreation sports, it is impossible for staff members to personally cover every event. If you have local school or recreation sports news or photos you would like to see published, we welcome you sending those to us.
Sports news, photos and announcements may be submitted to sports@barrowjournal.com or mailed or taken to our office at 77 East May Street, Winder.
Photos submitted should identify those in the photograph and the nature of the event or team.
9. Crime & Court Reporting
The Barrow Journal will report local arrests and incidents from area law enforcement agencies. This includes both misdemeanor and felony arrests. These reports come from a variety of law enforcement agencies, including local, state and federal officials
The Barrow Journal will also publish certain actions of the local courts and judicial system, including the disposition of cases.
All names of those arrested and charged with a crime will be published; the Barrow Journal will not withhold names.
Generally speaking, the names of those involved in incidents where there is no arrest will not be published. However, there may be occasions where the details of the incident do result in some names being published. That will be at the discretion of the editor and publishers.
10. Donation Photos
The Barrow Journal will only publish photos of business donations to civic, school and charity groups if the value being donated exceeds $500.
Advertising Policies
1.Classified Advertising
Classified ads are FREE for the categories of Yard Sale, Pets, Wanted to Buy, Job Wanted, Lost & Found and non-commercial General Merchandise ads for items of $250 or less. Limit one free ad per household per week.
Paid classified ads for other categories are $5 per week for 20 words or less. Additional words are 10 cents each. Bold words are 20 cents each; centered lines or double-spaced lines are 50 cents per line. A border around an ad is an additional $10. To provide a tearsheet is $10 per week.
Paid classified ads can be paid for by cash, check or credit card. Classified ads for regular businesses that have an account with the Barrow Journal may be charged.
All housing and rental ads must conform to state and federal laws.
Work at home ads or ads that appear to be attempts to “scam” readers will be rejected.
Classified advertising deadline is 12 noon on Mondays for that week’s print edition. Classifieds received at other times may be posted to our online classified website before the print edition is published.
2. Display Advertising
General display advertising deadline is 12 noon on Monday for that week’s edition.
• Credit Policy - Customers must pay in advance by cash, check, MasterCard or Visa unless an established account in good standing exists. Customers wishing to establish an account will be given, faxed or mailed a credit application upon request. Please allow at least 14 working days for application review and decision. Submission of a credit application does not indicate extension of credit. If credit is extended, the payment terms are net in thirty days from the date the bill is mailed from MainStreet Newspapers. Finance charges will accrue after thirty days. Any discounted rates extended automatically become void if a balance exceeds sixty days. Noncompliance with our credit policy will cause any discounted rates to become void and the customer will be responsible for any prior discounts taken.
• Errors - Reimbursement for advertising errors made by these newspapers will be limited to the amount of space the error contains in the ad and will only be made for a single publication date.
• Position Requests - Guaranteed positioning may be granted with the following conditions:
1. Ad must be a minimum of 33 column inches.
2. A minimum guaranteed positioning charge of 30% will be added to the total ad price.
3. Advertising is not permitted on section fronts and certain pages.
4. In the event of a conflict with a color page, color takes precedence.
5. Position request must be logistically and technically feasible based on our press capability and other factors.
6. Deadline, credit, color and all other policies apply.
Outside of the conditions above, requests for positioning will be given every consideration, however no placement guarantees will be given or assumed. We will take page or position requests and try to accommodate, but we cannot guarantee position. Ad placement is based on color, ad size, section size, the date and time we receive the ad and other factors which vary from week to week. Advertising is not permitted on the front pages and other certain pages of any of our newspapers. No reimbursements will be made for unfulfilled position requests.
• Proofs - Customers requesting pre-approved proofs of their display ads must submit all copy before 12 noon on the Friday prior to publication. Proofs will be provided at no charge to the customer and the correction of our errors on original copy from customer will be made at no charge. Other changes, including stylistic changes to layout, will be billed at special layout charges. There is no guarantee of a proof for copy provided after 12 noon Friday prior.
• Color - The demand for color frequently exceeds availability. Therefore, color is provided at rates listed on a first-come, first-served basis when actual ad or copy is received. Customers are encouraged to request color early and send final copy by 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to publication.
• Contract and Commissionable Rates - Available upon request. Contact Scott Buffington at (706) 367-5233. If an advertiser does not fulfill the level of advertising agreed upon, the advertiser will be billed the difference between the rate previously billed and the rate actually earned for all advertising placed under the contract.
• Special Charges - Special layouts, electronic art correction, extended photo sessions or multiple proofs billed at $55/hour.
The publishers of MainStreet Newspapers, Inc. reserve the right to edit, alter or omit any advertising without cause. Payment does not indicate acceptance of an ad. If ad is rejected, monies paid for ad will be returned in full. Advertiser or advertising agency assumes liability for all content of advertisement printed and responsibility for any claims arising therefrom and made against the publisher. Publishers will not be bound by any conditions printed or otherwise, appearing on order blanks or copy instructions when such conditions conflict with policies. Advertising which simulates editorial content must be preceded by the words, “paid advertisement” set in 9 point or larger type.

If ad is rejected, monies paid for ad will be returned in full. Advertiser or advertising agency assumes liability for all content of advertisement printed and responsibility for any claims arising therefrom and made against the publisher. Publishers will not be bound by any conditions printed or otherwise, appearing on order blanks or copy instructions when such conditions conflict with policies. Advertising which simulates editorial content must be preceded by the words, “paid advertisement” set in 9 point or larger type.
