The Barrow County Water and Sewerage Authority voted Tuesday night to form a committee to look into hiring an attorney, apparently for the upcoming renegotiations of wholesale water contracts with Auburn, Braselton, Statham and Winder. Three of the four contracts already are up for renewal, and the fourth must be put in place next year. [Full Story »]

The spring musical has become a sign of the end of the WBHS Dramatic Arts season after last year’s “Guys and Dolls” production. It brought back so many memories of working for an entire semester on our final show. This Saturday night was bittersweet. I attended my high school’s musical production of “Anything Goes” and while it was beautifully done, the night was filled with final goodbyes and new beginnings. [Full Story »]

BOC takes two actions on new radio system

At an April 19 called meeting to discuss the planned $5 million upgrade of the county’s radio communications system, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners approved a contract for the design of two initial tower sites. Lowe Engineers Inc. will be paid $14,500 per site for the design work and drawings and also to perform field work to get them through the federal regulatory processes. A third tower site is to be engineered and designed in the Bethlehem area next year. [Full Story »]

Deputies responded to HWY 124 at Savannah Oaks subdivision in reference to an explosive device in the roadway. There have been no reported injuries and the GBI is on scene and taken custody of the item. Initial investigation shows the item possibly fell off of a vehicle while traveling down the road. The item has been transported off site by the GBI EOD unit and the scene is now clear.

Another administrator with Barrow County Schools has taken a job with a neighboring school system. Oconee County Schools announced on its website that Claire Miller, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning with Barrow schools, has taken a similar position in Oconee County. The Oconee County Board of Education approved Miller and another hire on April 16. They will begin their new positions on June 1. [Full Story »]

A prank caller is posing as law enforcement and dialing Winder citizens asking for their personal information, authorities say. Winder police say several people have come forward since Monday to report receiving a call from someone acting as a deputy or a police officer. [Full Story »]
