Collaboration efforts could soon be strengthened between Barrow County Schools and the county tax assessor’s office.
A special committee of the Barrow County Board of Education met with the Board of Tax Assessors, chair of the Board of Commissioners Pat Graham and BOC member Isaiah Berry at a meeting last Wednesday.
The meeting was planned following the discovery that a homestead exemption had been incorrectly applied to Barrow County Schools over a 16-year period, which could have cost the system between $20-$30 million.
New tax appraiser, Don Elrod, discovered the error, notified the BOE and corrected the application of the exemption. But, the BOE has been concerned with the possibility of future errors and has held several discussions at its recent board meetings seeking a way to hold the BTA accountable.
