Braselton’s former court clerk has plead not guilty to charges that she stole at least $17,000 from the town’s municipal court.

Becky Skelton, 48, entered her not guilty plea on Wednesday, June 30 — a day before she was slated to make her first court appearance for an arraignment. She is seeking a jury trial.

In June, Skelton was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on four counts of theft by taking and one count of forgery in the second degree.

Skelton was arrested in June 2009 on 14 counts of theft by taking and one count of violation of oath by a public officer. After more investigation, she was arrested again in March 2010 for new charges of theft by taking and forgery in the first degree. She posted a $31,000 bond.

Saying it didn’t have a law allowing firearms dealers in the city, the Hoschton City Council voted Thursday to change its zoning ordinance after a council member said a gun shop was unfairly treated by officials. [Full Story »]

The last call for serving alcohol in Braselton just got a little later.

On Monday, the Braselton Town Council amended its alcohol ordinance to extend servings hours for Fridays and Saturdays to 2 a.m.

Previously, an inn or restaurant in the town limits could serve alcohol Mondays through Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sundays, from 12:30 p.m. to midnight.
The extra one hour of service may boost the spirits at Bottom of The Cup, which asked the town council to amend its alcohol ordinance.

An owner of the Spouts Springs Road restaurant and bar explained in an email to town officials that patrons are leaving around 1 a.m. and traveling to Gwinnett County. [Full Story »] 

Barrow Regional Medical Center has formally filed a request to have the Georgia Supreme Court consider making a decision in a pending legal battle for a proposed hospital in Braselton.

Winder HMA — which owns Barrow Regional – filed a petition on Friday to have the state’s highest court review a March decision by the Georgia Court of Appeals allowing Northeast Georgia Medical Center to build a hospital in Braselton.

Barrow Regional had initially filed a notice to appeal the latest decision and officially submitted a petition with the state supreme court on Friday.

The Georgia Supreme Court will now have to decide if it will consider hearing the case. [Full Story »]
