Friday, May 18. 2012
The Hwy. 211 railroad crossing in Statham will be closed Monday as the Georgia DOT works to provide more clearance for vehicles going over the crossing. The area is expected to be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The move comes after Norfolk Southern Railroad replaced new concrete panels at the crossing which raised the grade, making a lower clearance for vehicles.

Time to talk about achievement gap
Friday, May 11. 2012
For at least three decades, politicians and education officials have been discussing and debating what to do about the “achievement gap.” It’s a difficult question. The fundamental issue is that minority students in the country — black and Hispanic — consistently underperform on standardized education tests. For some states, this isn’t a big issue. Wisconsin, for example, has a small black and Hispanic population of less than 13 percent. But for Georgia where blacks and Hispanics make up some 39 percent of the population, the lack of academic achievement by minorities is profoundly troubling. And because those students’ scores drag the entire state down statistically, it is an issue very much on the minds of policymakers in Georgia.

Winder pays Eberhart legal fee
Wednesday, May 9. 2012
With no public comment, the Winder City Council voted Tuesday night to pay $1,300 for the private attorney that councilman Charlie Eberhart hired to defend his ability to vote and to hold office in Winder. Eberhart, who claims his funeral home on King Street as his domicile, was forced to hire an attorney when his political challenger, James Cooley, pursued not only an appeal to the Barrow County Board of Elections, but also to the Barrow County Superior Court. The council’s vote was 5-0-1, after Eberhart left the council chambers during the vote.

In addition to Barrow, they include Carroll, Hall, Spalding and Walton.
