Still a couple weeks after the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court ruling, I am still unsure where I stand in the fight. As a young woman, I can empathize with the women in the fight. However as a fairly common user of my brain, I still question if the law in question is even legal.
Under The Affordable Care Act, twenty contraceptives were mandated. Hobby Lobby still covers 16 of those; the four in question were ruled to interfere with the corporation’s religious beliefs. Well, I grew up in the era of abstinence-only sex education so upon hearing a mandate of 20 contraceptives, in the back of my mind I’m still thinking “Wow that’s a lot!”
Even now, including abstinence I can count five ways to prevent pregnancy and STIs. Granted there are many different brands of “The Pill.” Sixteen methods of protections seems pretty generous to someone who grew up with the “Mean Girls” Coach Carr approach: “Don’t have sex because you will get pregnant and die.”
