Although Barrow County leaned heavily Republican in Tuesday’s election, Barrow County’s African-American leaders are celebrating the historic election of Democrat Barack Obama as the nation’s first black President.
“I am just thrilled; it’s something I have been praying for, that the day would come,” the Rev. Alfred Hazel said in an interview Wednesday morning. “I grew up in the Civil Rights Movement and went into the Labor Movement in 1970, where I worked for 38 years. One of the things we were working for was to get people registered to vote so we could make a difference.
“Last night was the fruition of all of my hopes and dreams, that America would look at Barack Obama and see him as an American and not an African-American. We are a nation of people and not just ethnic backgrounds.”
Hazel said he received phone calls until early Wednesday morning from friends around the United States.
“I got phone calls until about 2 a.m. this morning from all over the country – from Chicago, Louisiana, Florida, even from New York,” he said. “People are excited all over. I’m so excited about his being elected to the presidency of the United States of America. I’m no longer looking for my promised 40 acres and a mule.”
Obama’s election is going to bring racial healing to the nation, Hazel said.
“I think it’s bridged that great divide that had this country divided by political affiliations and racial and ethnic differences,” he said.
Kenny Lumpkin, a local businessman and president of the Brotherhood Club, Inc., a predominantly African-American civic group that focuses on at-risk youths, said Obama’s victory gives new hope to children.
“What this does is it gives every parent like myself an opportunity to sit down with their children and say, ‘You can do that,’” he said.
Lumpkin noted that Obama’s Jan. 20 inauguration will fall one day after the national holiday commemorating the birthday of slain Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
“I think there will be formed a contingency of people who will make the trip to Washington to be part of that event,” Lumpkin said.
Winder City Councilman Charlie Eberhart said he believes Obama was destined for greatness.
“I think he was born, just like Martin Luther King was born, to break the racial barrier,” Eberhart said. “Barack Obama was born to become the first African-American president. I think it was God’s calling.
“I hope we can move this country forward in a right way and that all races will accept him for who he is, not for the color of his skin. When he made his victory speech last night, he said this is not a black America, it’s not a white America – it’s an America.”
Obama received 6,651 votes in Barrow County on Tuesday. That was 62 percent more local votes Democratic nominee John Kerry received in the 2004 general election (4,095) and 82 percent more votes than Al Gore received in 2000 (3,657).
Still, that number fell far short of McCain’s heavy draw of 17,613 votes in Barrow County.

Although I'm in that smaller group who voted for Obama, I look forward to having a peaceful and productive discussion with people from all groups. :)
Even Bill O'Reily, the gibbering, liberal-hating, walking temper tantrum of Fox News, said Obama's an OK guy.
The fact that Obama won by a landslide means that I'm not the only republican that voted for him. I'm not the only one who thought McCains chose of Caribou Barbie was a BAD BAD BAD choice.
I have been watching Obama since he was a young man. I have always been impressed with him.
I hate to say it, but voted for Bush both times.
Oh wait -- I think I've turned into a democrat. OMG when did that happen?
After reading some of the posts on this subject, and conferring with many of my opponents on the other side of the aisle,(Democrats) it is very clear that many in America voted for Obama simply because he is the First African- American to run for President. This would be the wrong reason to vote for any president, regardless of how frustrated you are with the current political system in our country. I did not vote for John McCain because he was white! I vote for him because I felt he had the necessary experience, values, and political platform this nation needed to get out of the basement level we now find ourselves in. Race is simply NOT a good reason to vote for any president.
Quite frankly, any presidential candidate can use the word CHANGE to try and impress voters. This idea is NOT NEW! Clinton used it, and promised all kinds of "pie in the sky" programs like universal health care, etc. In the end Clinton was remembered for being more interested in a White House female Intern, than his own wife, and carrying on adulterous rendezvous in the WHITE HOUSE! Some change that was huh? What about the impeachment process we had to endure as a nation? How embarrassing!
In the end Ladies and Gentlemen, voting for a presidential candidate because of the color of his/her skin, is a bad idea in the history of bad ideas. Skin color won't save our country from the economic woes in which we find ourselves today. Only a carefully planned, well executed policy will work.
Up to this point, all I have seen from Obama is TALK without ANY substance or SPECIFICS!
In my opinion, Obama doesn't have a clue how he will get this country out of the muck. His only hope is that all the Wall Street cronies he hired from all the problem companies we bailed out might tell him how to proceed. We already know that the problems we have can't be fixed quickly. Yet Obama continues to tell us something we already knew from the beginning. African-American leaders can celebrate all they want, but I, and other Americans will postpone our celebrations until we actually see Obama do SOMETHING besides TALK...................... Until next time

Is there anything that will convince you that Obama's a decent guy with some good ideas who really does have America's best interests in mind?
Bigot.
I believe I stated MY reasons for voting for McCain very clearly in my post. Also, if memory serves, I didn't resort to inflammatory language and geo-political labeling as you chose to do by using the "B" word. But again, as typical Democrats, you are unable or unwilling to accept the fact that casting a vote for President based on race alone because of personal frustration is a bad idea. It does not solve the problems we face.
The fact of the matter is OBAMA has given us NO
SPECIFICS of his plans for America to get us out of this current economic downturn.
OBAMA has no specifics. All he has done is use the word CHANGE 2 billion times! That word will not fix the economy! We need ACTION not WORDS. It is apparent, that Obama is only comfortable with the latter, while he is clearly uncomfortable trying to convey specifics to the American people. I and others will listen to Obama only when he finally says something WORTH LISTENING TO! So far he has not! America needs to stay focused on action, not words! Until next time..........

The specifics are _right there_. They have been for _years_. The summary covers most things, and then there's a detailed policy document (in PDF format) linked on each issue page.
What more do you want?
I have no intention of debating the issues with you. I already know how you feel and it's clear that you're not a good listener if you heard nothing specific from Mr Obama in all this time. So what would be the point?
And you can dig up as many pseudo-intellectual phrases for it as you want, but anyone who purposely and sweepingly accuses over half the voters in America of racial bias, is a Bigot. Look it up.
You take care now.
It must be our proximity to the latte-sipping liberal strongholds of Athens and Atlanta. :)
But alas as you can see, all Kathy did was continue to use the "B" word and accuse me of not being a good listener. While you may have not voted for Obama because he is African- American, many did, and were interviewed on several National TV newscasts standing proud for their decision to vote for Obama based on race. These Ladies and Gentlemen are also FACTS that apparently should be discarded after the election is over. Oh well, at least I tried to be reasonable.............
Until next time...........

As far as I can tell, your reason for voting for McCain is because Obama hasn't provided specifics. And that claim is composed of a substance that isn't appropriate to discuss on a news site's comment section.
So lay it out in simple, carefully punctuated terms. Why did you vote for McCain?
By the way, I am not a Democrat, I'm worse...I'm a full fledged liberal. Please refer to me as such in the future, if you must refer to me at all.
And I WOULD like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.....
You have won my heart! I didn't think there were any liberals in Barrow or Jackson. In fact, I tayght at Jackson 3 years ago, and was almost fired because a preacher called me a liberal. ou see, I taught social studies and our class discussions led me into some dangerous territory (which at the time I didn't know was dangerous). I felt so alone. I'm glad to see you exist! I love your comments. Beware of Kevin w. He is a uneducated idiot who made some money off selling land and now thinks he is can make logical comments. However, they just show his ignorance and biggotry too. By the way, I am psychic intuative. I can tell YOU that because you are open minded enought to realize that another part of the brain can be used without being called demonic!
I have seen your comments posted everywhere...you love confusion and you love to stir up trouble. You know the truth although you fight it. Black people are proud and you will never understand it....Honestly we don't expect you to.....so you make up reasons on why things have happened the way they have.....it's ok.....stroke yourself and do what ever you need to make yourself feel better. You are accustomed to the same things and the same look and I know it bothers you...it bothers you more that he is black than black people voting for him because he is black.....in some small cases that theory has some truth but it is no different than some white people not voting for Obama becasue he was black....those groups are small....you must remember your fellow caucasians voted for him as well for there own reasons and how could you read every persons mind on there choice...it ok you must do that to give your self some relief because your mind is so puzzled on how this could happen...Believe me we as black people expect him to prove himself just like you...we are expecting him to do his best to clean up the trouble that GEORGE W put us in..OBAMA IS NOT THE SAVIOR he is just OUR PRESIDENT....I understand it is ok....type up all you can....You are cynical and angry and maybe just maybe while youre sitting in church one sunday and your pastor just happens to preach a word from on high one that can touch and change an angry life.(not a political hate message but a word from the Lord) ..I pray you are in that number....but its ok like I said....its a big thing for us black folks and we are astounded so I can imagine what people with hidden supremecy and "possible racism" may feel.....WOW....it must really be that hard for you!...Again...God Bless you we do understand how hard this must be for you but you will make it...IN THE NAME OF JESUS YOU WILL NOT SPEW HATRED AND CONFUSION THAT WILL LEAD TO THE CONFUSION OF OTHERS...DO SOMETHING LIKE HELPING SOMEONE...MAKE THIS A BETTER PLACE.... YOU HAVE THE POWER...FEED SOMEONE THAT IS HUNGRY...GIVE TO SOMEONE IN NEED....PRAY FOR THIS NATION AND ASK THE LORD'S WILL TO BE DONE....I HAVE...IF MCCAIN WOULD HAVE GOTTEN IN OFFICE I WOULD HAVE RESPECTED HIS AUTHORITY...THE BIBLE SAYS YOU MUST RESPECT THOSE THAT HAVE RULE OVER YOU... Don't worry Mr Anderson...don't fret...God will console your soul and challenge your close mindness....I will add you to my prayer list that Jesus Christ PERFECT PLAN WILL PREVAIL IN YOUR LIFE....BE BLESSED.....YOUR BLACK SISTER IN CHRIST!
Until next time.......

Yet Obama claims to be a Christian!! He voted to deny emergency health care to babies who survive botched abortions, and were still ALIVE!! These facts have absolutely nothing to do with what color his skin is!! This is what the man said and did! Please do not take my word for it. All the facts are there for any one to find. Ask your Pastor! He will know the truth about what I said. You have used racist terms in your posts like supremacy and hidden racism to describe my post. I have not ever used ANY RACIST terms in describing my opinion in any post. You do not know me ma'm! You are entitled to your opinion, and I have always defended that right in any of my posts, which you can verify at your pleasure. I draw the line however, when opponents resort to race baiting remarks that have absolutely no place on this site. I also did not say that YOU voted for OBAMA because he was black. I qualified my remarks at the beginning of my post. You either missed that part of the post, or simply chose to ignore it. Only you know the reason why! Finally, I DID NOT VOTE FOR MCCAIN BECAUSE HE WAS WHITE!!! I voted for him because I felt he had the best plan to get America out of the hole the Democratic controlled congress got us into!! And yes I prayed about it just like you did. I just reached a different conclusion than you did! That's what makes America great! Freedom of speech and thought! I would appreciate it very much, if you would stop the RACE BAITING and stick to the facts. Just because I didn't vote for Obama, does not make me a Racist! Perhaps you are the one who needs to do a gut check................Think about it!!

Instead, you choose to parrot tired talking points that I've been listening to since Obama announced his candidacy. I've countered them a thousand times over, and at this point I just can't be bothered. All the people who are rational and persuadable see that Obama is a decent person, and is capable of doing the job he has been hired to do. Those people will be paying attention and casting a vote in 2012 and 2016 based on research and analysis (for or against Obama).
I feel sorry for all the moderate religious people who watch you spew your idiocy while waving the banner of Christianity, and can't do much to prevent the damage you cause to their image.
You're in the fringe, and I'm going to enjoy watching you be marginalized further as the Republican party wakes up from its decades of shortsighted pandering.

I guess "BS" means "banana split" right? You have never countered The Saddleback Forum comments by Obama on abortion, OR the denial of health care to botched abortions where the baby is still alive! He voted to let that baby who was alive out of the womb, DIE!!!! It is on the record!! Look it up!! YOU HAVE ZERO DEFENSE FOR OBAMA"S stand on TAKING A HUMAN LIFE after a bothced abortion!! Their is simply NO DEFENSE PERIOD! I did the research. I challenge you to do the same. Since you hide behind blog masks,to avoid being accountable, I doubt if you even care about research unless it proves YOUR POINT CORRECT! Easy to throw stones when you know you won't have to worry about any of those stones coming back to you!

He already explained what he meant on the abortion question at Saddleback in a later interview, and the abortion bill in the Illinois senate was exactly the same as the federal bill, but had all kinds of crap attached to it.
I'm not going to go grab the details on either of these because you aren't really interested in discussing it.
You displayed truth and transperency!.....GOD BLESS YOU
Throughout these streams, I find you more and more offensive. You are a stupid, biggoted against other ethnicities and women, uneducated farmer and it shows. You are also an arrogant wife beater who pretends to be christian. You also are responsible for unchecked growth in Barrowe and Jackson because you sold so much land and used your money for selfish reasons like building a big house. Now you have nothing better to do than blow your own horn about every subject in the paper, and your comments ALWAYS show your ignorance. The best thing to do is READ and not speak!
Anyone willing to nominate me for office? I CAN AND WILL MAKE THE CHANGES NEEDED. THIS COUNTY IS CHANGING DRASTICALLY AND WILL NO LONGER SUPPORT ONLY THE SUPERLATIVE RIGHT-WINGERS! We need to bring government back to the middle.
