Following a brutally confrontational debate with county employees Tuesday night, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners decided to take the next step toward the privatization of some county services.
The vote was 4-3, with commissioners Isaiah Berry, Billy Parks and Ben Hendrix voting no. District 3 Commissioner Steve Worley made the motion and cast the swing vote in favor of county manager Randall Dowling’s recommendation to pay consultant Oliver Porter $20,000 to help prepare detailed requests for qualifications of private companies interested in taking over the services.
Chairman Pat Graham, who has proposed the concept of privatization since last year, said if the RFQ process is done properly, it would give the board the information it needs to make the final decision.
