Barrow County School Superintendent Wanda Creel told the school system's principals today that she is the sole finalist for the position of superintendent of Gainesville's city schools.
"I can confirm that this morning Dr. Creel met with principals to tell them that she would be announced today as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of the Gainesville City Schools," said Ken Greene, assistant superintendent for system operations.
Gainesville's board of education voted unanimously in a called meeting this morning to offer the job to Creel, according to a member of that school board.
Following contract negotiations, the Gainesville BOE is expected to take action in early January. The city's current superintendent is retiring no later than June 30, 2014, and Creel would make the move sometime before that, the Gainesville BOE member told the Barrow Journal.
Barrow BOE chairman Mark Still said in an email to the newspaper that this county's BOE would meet privately after Gainesville's board takes action "to make a decision on how to proceed."
Creel has been superintendent of Barrow County schools since March 2010. She previously worked as assistant superintendent of teaching and learning for the Houston County Board of Education and from 2007-2008 was associate state superintendent for school improvement services.
