Barrow County schools’ graduation rate for the 2012-2013 school year was higher than Georgia’s statewide rate. According to statewide data released Wednesday for the 2012-2013 school year, Barrow County’s overall graduation rate was 72.5 percent. That is a jump of about 8 percent in two years, and it slightly exceeds the statewide graduation rate of 71.5 percent.
“We’re pretty excited about that,” said Matt Thompson, director of student and data services
All but one nearby school system — Clarke County schools (69.5 percent) — also surpassed the state graduation rate. Barrow County’s “four-year cohort” rate plummeted to 64.2 percent for the 2010-2011 school year. The graduation rate improved last year to 67.95 percent, but that was still below the statewide rate. So the latest data is good news for local school officials who are focused on improving the graduation rates, which are one of the ways to measure the quality of a school system.
