The biggest challenge for all of the candidates in this year’s municipal elections may just be getting people to pay attention — and to vote.
In the first week of advance voting last week, only 101 people went to the Barrow County Board of Elections & Voter Registration Office on East Broad Street in Winder to cast ballots in any of the races in Auburn, Bethlehem or Winder.
“As of Friday we had a total of 101 who voted in person,” said county elections supervisor Monica Franklin. “We haven’t had any from Bethlehem and only five from Auburn. I think it’s just because we’re not really convenient for those two cities. I’m hoping it picks up the further along we get.”
In addition to the 96 Winder residents who voted in person, another eight requested ballots to vote by mail, Franklin said. Advance voting ends Friday, Nov. 1.
With two seats to fill, Auburn has the most races on this year’s ballot.
