The mayors of Braselton and Carl will serve new terms without having to go through elections, as will some of their town council members, since only one candidate qualified in each race. In addition to Braselton Mayor Bill Orr, District 2 incumbent Petty Slappey will serve another term, and Rhonda Stites will replace Dudley Ray in District 4. In Carl, Mayor David Brock, Post 1 incumbent Frank Cheely and Post 2 incumbent Jimmie Shedd will serve new terms. Braselton's qualifying period ended Wednesday and Carl's Thursday.
The only contested race so far in Winder is for the at-large council seat currently occupied by Bob Dixon. Nicole Tobias qualified for that race on Tuesday. Incumbents Sonny Morris and Ridley Parrish also have qualified to run for re-election. Elsewhere around the county:
•Auburn: Former mayor Harold Money qualified on Wednesday to run for council, but he withdrew his application on Thursday. The other qualifiers are incumbent councilman Bob Vogel, plus William B. Ackworth and Jay Riemenschneider.
•Bethlehem: Two competitors qualified for the open Post 3 seat as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday: Joe Price and C.L. Wood. Post 1 incumbent Tommy Parten and Post 5 incumbent Tommy Buchanan also qualified Thursday.
•Statham: Incumbents Betty Lyle, Gayle Steed and David Huth have qualified. No challengers had surfaced as of Thursday afternoon.
Residents considering throwing their hats in the rings in Auburn, Bethlehem, Statham and Winder must do so by 4:30 p.m. Friday.
