In their first budget under Barrow’s new county-manager form of government, county officials are playing hardball with Sheriff Jud Smith. County manager Jock Connell will present his proposed FY2014 budget to the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, Aug. 27. That budget will recommend cutting the sheriff's office and jail by $777,000.
Sheriff Smith had a strong reaction to the idea, comparing it to the battles he had with former BOE chairman Danny Yearwood.
Smith said Tuesday that he was “disappointed and a little disgusted” to learn only on Friday, after multiple meetings with the budget committee, county staff and individual BOC members, that major last-minute cuts had been made to his departmental budgets.
“I feel like public safety has been targeted,” Smith said. “I’m not surprised at the politics. It’s the same situation every time. I’ve dealt with it the last four years.”
