Students at Auburn Elementary School and Yargo Elementary School learned about safety and prevention during last week’s Barrow County Safety Zone program.
The program, now in its third year, is a coalition of 18 local, state and national organizations that offer numerous safety and prevention educational programs to the Barrow County School System.
The Safety Zone has expanded and improved every year and this year it continues that growth. Two new organizations have joined the Safety Zone this year. The American Cancer Society is offering its Sun Safety Basics which teaches the students about skin cancer prevention, and Georgia Power is offering its Electrical Safety education to the students. Plus several organizations that have been involved with the Safety Zone have brought new programs this year.
Lieutenant Scott Dakin of Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services and Safety Zone Chairman said he enjoys working with the coalition.
“Plus every year the school administrators are anxious to get the Safety Zone booked and when we are at the school the student and teachers are just a pleasure to work with,” he added.
Safety Zone Coordinator Meg Loggins said even though the program is a lot of work, she is glad to do it.
“It is well worth it to help educate my daughters and other children in Barrow County,” she said. “This coalition takes on current safety and prevention issues and works to educate our children about them.”
The Barrow County Safety Zone coalition is dedicated to helping keep the children of Barrow County safe through numerous and diverse programs. The programs range from Bike Safety to poison prevention and suicide prevention.
“I want to thank every organization involved with the Barrow County Safety Zone for all their hard work and dedication,” said Dakin. “I also want to thank Rutledge Crane Service for allowing Meg Loggins the time to coordinate the programs. It is businesses and organizations like them that make this kind of coalition succeed.”
The following organizations comprise the Barrow County Safety Zone coalition. The American Cancer Society, Athens Regional Medical Center, Barrow County Family Connection/Communities in Schools, Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services, Barrow County Health Department, Barrow County School System, Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, Barrow Regional Medical Center, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Natural Resources (Fort Yargo), Georgia Power, Northeast Health District, Peace Place, Project Adam, The Tree House, Uzupis Theater Group, Winder Police Department and Winder Brad Akins YMCA.
