The Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services is joining fire departments around the nation and the United States Fire Administration to mark Oct. 5-11 as National Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s theme is “It’s Fire Prevention Week Prevent Home Fires.”
“While everyone should focus year round on fire safety and fire prevention, we are asking citizens to thoroughly inspect their homes this week and look for hazards,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer. “Your family’s safety depends on it.”
Some safety tips offered by firefighters is to stay in the kitchen when you are cooking, maintain heating equipment and chimneys, and keep flammable materials away from heat sources. Citizens are also reminded to install and maintain smoke alarms. There are many more safety tips available by visiting the United States Fire Administrations website at www.usfa.dhs.gov.
To mark this annual event Barrow County Firefighters will be out in force visiting schools in Barrow County teaching children about fire safety and prevention.
“You will see fire trucks and firefighters at the elementary schools throughout October,” Dakin said. “We also want to make sure the adults in the county are practicing fire safety.”
