On Tuesday night, county manager Jock Connell will ask the Barrow County Board of Commissioners to create two newly restructured departments and a director's position for each. Connell wants to create a Department of Public Works and to hire a public works director. He also wants to create a Department of Economic/Community Development and to hire an economic/community development director. Both positions would have salary ranges of $77,690-$108,778. Also during the meeting will be a Motorola Solutions Inc. presentation on the status of the county’s new emergency communications system and a request by Barrow County Emergency Services chief Dennis Merrifield to spend another $9,410 on engineering services for the new system. The contract with Engineering Associates Inc. would be extended to June 30, and the additional contract amount would come from the $4 million allocated to the project, according to the meeting packet. The BOC meeting is at 7 p.m. and will be at 233 E. Broad St. in Winder.
proposal, we must first remember where we
are financially as a county. We must have a
solid financial tax base from which to work,
before we start adding more salaried positions.
Our current tax base is not in good shape, and
our county image is in desperate need of an "Extreme
Makeover, after the last 4 years of political infighting,
and EEOC lawsuits. Our image in both the region and
the State level, is not the best.
Our sitting Commissioners and new part-time County Chair,
should be working with the existing economic development
entities, as well as all of the Mayors, city councils, and BOE
members, to develop, and implement a solid and fiscally responsible
plan to bring in new tech and industrial based investment, that will
Improve our tax base. A firm financial foundation
should be our first priority. That is what the taxpayers voted for,
and I hope our new County Manager, County Chair, and Commissioners, are
listening.
