Friday’s battle with Morgan County was only a scrimmage, but the Apalachee High School baseball team saw some positive signs which the Diamond Cats hope will continue during the 2013 regular season.
AHS rallied for a 6-5 win powered by three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats then took advantage of a defensive error by Morgan County to score the winning run.
“There wasn’t much to talk about early on but in the last inning our bats came alive,” said AHS coach Mike Cavey.
The Wildcat coaches used the scrimmage to get seven pitchers work on the mound. Each went an inning. Mason Webb, Chance Rodriguez, Tyler Starnes, Justin Stephens, Tony Salvaggio and Ryan Janco each saw pitching action in the scrimmage.
Clint Ashe, did not pitch, as he continues to recover from a football injury.
“We want Clint to be ready for region,” Cavey said. “We wanted to give every pitcher a chance to see some live action in the scrimmage.”
The Diamond Cats are scheduled to open the regular season Wednesday (today) against Central Gwinnett on the road at 5:55 p.m. AHS will then venture to Duluth Friday for a 6 p.m. non-region tilt.
The home opener for the Wildcats will be Monday against Mountain View at 6:30 p.m. in another non-region contest.
Cavey said Sunday he was still undecided on the opening day starting pitcher although Webb was a strong possiblity. Cavey said the coaching staff would make the decision during the early part of the week once the team returned to practice.
