With one dissenting vote, the Barrow County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to set next year’s school calendar at 170 days. The approved calendar shows that the upcoming school year will begin Wednesday, Aug. 7, and end Thursday, May 15. Students will get four long breaks during the school year: from Oct. 14-18 for Fall Break; from Nov. 25-29 for Thanksgiving Break; from Dec. 23-Jan. 6, 2014 for Winter Break; and from April 14-18 for Spring Break.

The BCN reports that Dan Cromer and Randall Holland were absent Tuesday night. If that is true wouldn't the vote have been 6-1 with Will Dunn the lone dissenter? Just asking for clarification on who was present and who voted.

It was an error on our part. The Barrow County Board of Education's Feb. 5 vote to approve the 170-day calendar for the 2013-2014 school year was 6-1. Two members — Randall Holland and Dan Cromer — were not present for the vote. Will Dunn cast the sole vote against the adoption of the calendar.

Will the Start/End time be the same for High School students ? Or will it be the same time?

The plan is still for high school and middle school to start first, then elementary schools starting last. :(

The starting and/or ending times will probably change slightly, though, because adding 10 days back onto the calendar will mean that the school day doesn't have to be as long as it is currently.
