Worley fired from Monroe job; no plans to resign BOC seat

Steve Worley, the District 3 member of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, was fired Jan. 31 from his full-time position as the public works director for the City of Monroe.
According to the Feb. 5 edition of the Walton Tribune, the Monroe City Council held an emergency meeting last Thursday night and fired him for violating city policy and procedures.

Too bad for Steve. A million good things he has done for Walton & Barrow and the one wrong thing will be what everyone remembers.

If Worley refuses to resign (which any man with a scintilla of honor, shame or integirty would do), then he should be recalled posthaste. On the grounds that he has committed gross malfeasance in public office and is therefore unfit to continue to occupy same.

Well, he was fired in an "emergency" meeting from his government job. Since neither side will speak with specificity, we are left to draw inferences. Worley obviously hopes he can pull a Nixon-stonewall and keep his Barrow government job. An elected official who won't come clean is a man without honor or character. He is not fitto serve, but he loves to suck that government teat.

He's fired on Thursday the 31st and helps create a new Public Works Director position on Friday the 1st. Am I the ONLY one who has connected the dots?

I guess no one around here has heard the policy that 99% of government entities have.

The policy requires any employee running for public office to resign their position of employment.

Being a Director, it requires a vote of a the city council to remove them from that position.

This is nothing more than the Journal making a mountain out of a mole hill.

So Worley was in violation of the city/county ethics clause (policy) his entire last term?

If that's all this is about, then why is the CC so closed lipped?

Why didn't they fire him 5 years ago when he started his 1st term as commissioner?

Spin it any way you want BUT the fact remains, we don't know why he was fired. I just hope one of the local papers, be it the journal, county news or patch print the whole story

Given the negative publicity this situation will bring to the BOC,
Mr. Worley should at the very least offer to take a unpaid LOA while this situation is sorted out legally, and Ms. Graham and the County Attorney chat.
