Winder’s 5,800 natural gas customers soon will pay more for their natural gas service. The Winder City Council on Tuesday night voted unanimously to increase the monthly “base rate” that is assessed prior to any consumption of gas. Starting in March, residential customers will pay a base rate of $13.64, which is $1.64 more than the current rate of $12. That amounts to a 13.7-percent hike. Until now, all commercial customers had been paying a base rate of $30. But under the new rate structure, small businesses with meters similar in size to residential customers will pay only $14.65 per month. That is a rate decrease of about 50 percent. Commercial customers with medium-size meters will pay $43.48 per month — a hike of $13.48 or 45 percent. And customers using large meters will pay $67.62 per month, an increase of 125 percent. However, those big users will get discounted gas consumption rates, Toms said.
