Less than an hour after an Atlanta middle school student shot a fellow student in the neck last Thursday, some Barrow County students had a gun scare of their own. In the Barrow case, a 15-year-old boy who had been expelled from Winder-Barrow High School put on a hoodie sweatshirt that had the name of a current student and that partially obscured his face. Blending in with students, he then boarded a bus he had sporadically ridden as a student. En route to the Glenwood community, he allegedly claimed he was carrying a concealed weapon. He didn’t display the gun or threaten to use it, but in light of recent school-related shootings, some students were scared and at least one of them reported the incident to police a couple of hours later.

Last night on WSB there was a story about a very similar situation that happened at Tri Cities High School Friday afternoon. A former 16 year old student came on campus with a gun; the SRO was on top of the situation and eventually the student was apprehended in the bus loop. HOWEVER the key difference is that parents were immediately informed by text, email, and letter of the situation. The problem in Barrow County is that Dr. Creel talks a great deal about "transparency" and "communication" but that is hype and blatant falsehood. Unless it is something of good PR value to her that she can take credit for she will do everything possible to keep it under wraps. And this makes for a toxic workplace for those under her. Ask more questions about the district wide debacle last Wednesday during the weather crisis. She has this entire district in a choke hold. BOE wake up and smell the coffee for heaven's sake!
