Longtime Winder city councilman Charlie Eberhart died early Wednesday after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Mr. Eberhart was the owner of Eberhart & Son Mortuary, which has operated in the city for more than 50 years. He also held the Ward 2 seat on the Winder City Council for 22 years, making him its second longest-serving member at the time of his death.
Winder Mayor David Maynard said Mr. Eberhart served well his constituents.
“He was one of those people who never met a stranger and made other people feel comfortable,” Maynard said. “He would make you feel at ease and was really easy to talk to. I think he represented his district very, very well. He had a tremendous amount of support in his district.”
Visitation will be noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at White Oak Springs Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Winder First Baptist Church on Highway 11.

Charlie was a fine man who never met a stranger. He was kind and helpful to anyone and everyone who called on him for help. He was criticized by some because of his quiet and non-confrontational presence at the City of Winder council meetings. It wasn’t Charlie’s style to do a lot of talking or to “hog the microphone” at council meetings. But Charlie was a wise man who knew what he was doing. For 22 years he represented his district and the entire city very well by knowing the feelings of his constituency and voting his conviction. He will truly be missed.
