Wehunt pushes for female BOE leaders

When the Barrow County Board of Education met Tuesday night to elect its leaders for 2013, member Connie Wehunt pushed hard for the chairman and vice-chairman positions to be female.
“I’ve been on this board going on 11 years and I would really like to ask these men on this board to consider putting a lady as chair,” said Wehunt. “We have never had a lady on this board of education that was a chairperson and I think it would be good to have somebody, a woman, that would even out and balance out as an officer.”
But although Wehunt was joined in her push by the board's other female member, Lynn Stevens, they were outvoted in their efforts. Mark Still remained as BOE chairman and Mitch Churchhill as vice chairman. Stevens was nominated by Wehunt for both positions.

If it were any two women other than Mrs. Wehunt or Mrs. Stevens perhaps having females as officers would be a logical position. These two have proven however that they are unfit to even be seated on the BOE at all. And the designation "lady" can certainly not be applied to either one in terms of their behavior at Board meetings.

And BTW I am a woman.

And yet the citizens of Barrow keep voting for them! You have voters who don't care who is in charge of the school system, so what difference does it make if it's an inept male or female acting as "officer"?

Mr. Bailey and Mr. Dunn--and now hopefully Dr. Huff--are the only members of the BOE who can be trusted to act with wisdom and integrity. The others have compromised themselves to one extent or another. Since they have been reelected as chair and vice chair I sincerely hope in this new year Mr. Still and Mr. Churchill will wake up and smell the coffee and lead the BOE to make some better decisions. To quote my kids this BOE and supt are a "hot mess"--no wonder educators are leaving in record numbers. The environment in the BCS is toxic. Just ask any teacher...

I am a woman myself and I agree with you 100%. I have no respect for either one of them. The way they acted at the board meeting to the public over the bus situation at the beginning of the year was awful. They can grab Creel and all three can hit the road as far as I'm concerned. I took one of my children out this terrible mess with one left to graduate. Look around none of the staff in the school system are happy. The moral is so low.

If you haven't seen these two "ladies" in action, please come out and see for yourself. It's truly a spectacle that words cannot describe. It's bad enough that they are on the board in the first place, I cannot fathom either of them in a chairperson or vice chair position. I am sure that Ms. Stevens will create her own committee of some sort and appoint herself chairman. These meetings would go much quicker if she would stop speaking up every five minutes only to reword what has already been said, just to hear her own voice.

The two women are part of the circus that has taken place over the past few years. The sad part is they think they are doing something great for the community. It is like NO one hears the community!

The BCSS is a debacle. Yes, teachers are leaving, administrators are leaving, PDC personnel are leaving and no one sees a problem.

Promote them the chairperson! Based on the reputation of the system as it stands, it would not be a surprise. Maybe they can even give DWC more years.

boe assessor.... Wow! You are spot on. If I didn't know any better, I would think you and I have conversed before. Some of the things you are saying are, verbatim, things that I've said, too.
To parent, you won't find a teacher who is brave enough to speak up. Believe me, I've spent nearly 20 years in the system.

I believe, Anon, that we are "simpatico" simply because the problems are so VERY obvious. I realize we don't know each other, but it doesn't take rocket scientists to recognize how broken the supt and BOE are.

Bravery isn't the issue. It would be career SUICIDE to speak up. As a parent, I have so much to say about the system, but as a teacher, I need to be able to feed my family. So I will continue to simply shake my head at the shenanigans of these two women while pouring myself into my classroom and my students. Meanwhile, my own children receive private education because the hands of BCS teachers like me are tied by BOE members like the two mentioned in the article. I want more for my kids. The BOE makes a fool of our teachers and schools, all of which could be incredible if given the support, resources, and respect that they and it deserve.

She needs to get off the board and needs to be replaced. I don't vote for her and unfortunately, she is in my district. Counting down the years til my kids are out of school in Barrow County! 7 to be exact. .

Since getting the letter in my child's report card from Dr. Creel about this fantastic "communication tool" eBOARD, I hopped right on to read minutes from Tuesday night's BOE meeting. I know that's expecting a bit much for the minutes to already be there from Tuesday night, but unless I'm not looking in the correct place – there are no minutes there from December, November, October – in fact September 24 was the last time any minutes from a board meeting were posted. If I am wrong, someone please point me in the right direction. Why are the minutes not being posted? Could that have been the job of one of the multitude of people who have left in the mass exodus from this county?

I too am so surprised that both of them are still voted in. I saw for myself what they are all about when I attended the meeting regarding the bus situation last fall. I was shocked!!!!! They were closed minded and did not care about our students. I know in my heart if the decision was on them alone we would of had a tragedy on our hands. Even the news had to come out and see them in action. After all of our complaints they still voted to allow our kids to walk to school with no crossing lights or side walks. I could not believe 2 women could be so out of touch and cold. Not only should they not have chair positions. They should never be allowed on the board at all!! If the residents of our county knew about their voting records and lack of concern for our children they would not be in at all. Who cares if a woman or a man is in the position. We need a level headed person.They are older women who have no grasp of whats going on in our schools. So i'm saying(as a mother) Don't worry about a promotion. Worry about educating yourselves on the status of our system now. Start voting for our children not your own personal gains.
