One week after a mentally disturbed shooter took 26 lives at a Connecticut elementary school, the nation’s largest gun-rights lobby called for Congress to place armed police officers in every school.
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” said Wayne LaPierre, vice president of the National Rifle Association at a Dec. 21 press conference.
But the students and staffs of Barrow County’s public schools don’t have to wait on an act of Congress to feel safe. Walking the halls of every school are school resource officers who not only are armed, but also have been trained in stopping an “active shooter” on school grounds.
“Our SROs are sworn law enforcement officers that by our policy are always armed when they are in the schools and working there,” said Sheriff Jud Smith. “We work alongside the board of education, the superintendent and the principals to ensure the children and youth of our county are safe while they are attending school and beyond.”

This an example where Barrow Schools and the Police agencies are both Serving the Citizens, and our kids(also citizens)...
Not crickets, just not worth beating a dead horse.
That is not standard around the state...It is up to the local system. Nothing is standard. Oconee uses no SRO's.
the MERe sight of a UNIFORM with GunBelt immeddiatly stops the mentally ILL, laws we dont need no law! just more UNIFORMED STATE sponsored employees whose mere sight makes wrongdoers avoid the area!!!!!
Ex If one is at Westside Middle School, they also look after Kennedy Elementary next door.
You are providing the procedure for Barrow County, not the state.
This is a budget issue. A system as wealthy as Gwinnett could supply officers to every school if needed. The standard (you refer to) is based on the funds available, not what everyone else does, which would be considered the standard.
BCSS, which is in a non-spending budget, considered the idea of cutting SRO officers. She was not supported on the idea.
The Gwinnett County School Police office HQ is located at 52 Gwinnett Drive in Lawrenceville. Gwinnett Schools Police, have marked cars and has over 24 Officers and controls 50 additional "Safety & Security" personnel. They are also supported by Gwinnett County Police as well.
The Gwinnett County School Police Department maintains State of Georgia Law Enforcement Certification, a distinction currently held by only two public school system police agencies in the state.(Also the same certification that Winder PD & now Barrow SO has also attained)
