Seventeen people lost their lives on Georgia roadways during the long holiday weekend. That was more than five times the three deaths during the same holiday weekend a year ago.
One of the fatal wrecks was in Barrow County. A 29-year-old Buford man was killed at about 7:40 p.m. Dec. 21 in a head-on crash on Rockwell Church Road west of Moons Bridge Road. Corey Scott Appling died after the 1996 Toyota Tacoma truck he was driving crossed the center line and hit a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Connie Sue Wallace, 46, of Winder. She was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
After midnight Saturday in Banks County, 53-year-old Barry Lane Forrester of Maysville was killed. His truck had broken down on Georgia 323 and was partially in the travel lane. He got underneath his vehicle to attempt a repair when a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 64-year-old Jerry Truman Blackwell of Ellijay hit Forrester's pickup, pinning him.
The 102-hour holiday weekend reporting period was from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Christmas. As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Georgia State Patrol had responded to 685 crashes with 300 injuries and 11 fatalities. Other agencies around the state had responded to crashes with six additional fatalities.

OOOOH my god 685 crashes 300 injuries 11 fatalities. We need to demand the government do something. No more high capacity passenger cars. More invasive background checks on drivers. A national car registration. How many more deaths do we have to endure.
