It was a day for the dogs (and other pets for that matter). That’s one reason why a Braselton council member brought his pup for the opening of the town’s latest distribution center.

PETCO opens new Braselton center
PETCO — one of the largest national retailers of pet food, supplies and services — opened its Braselton distribution center on Thursday.
The mascot for the event? Gucci, the four-legged friend of Joann Ray, wife of Braselton council member Dudley Ray.
“She’s one of PETCO’s loyal, best customers,” said Dudley Ray, as he prepared to include Gucci in a ribbon-cutting photo session with other officials.
PETCO offers more than 100,000 pet-related products in over 850 stores in the United States. The company’s Braselton facility opened by serving 175 of stores. By Monday, the distribution center will serve 222 stores in nine Southeastern states.
And by mid-October, the facility will handle all of PETCO’s web-based orders for the East Coast.
The 506,000-square-foot facility on Ga. Hwy. 124 in Barrow County formerly housed a Sears distribution center, which was relocated to Pendergrass in 2007.
As a new home for PETCO, the facility will be the 10th distribution center for the company. Ultimately, the facility could serve 400-500 PETCO stores.
David Bolen, executive vice president for PETCO, said the Braselton facility will be the company’s largest and most productive distribution center.
“This is a much more automated-operated facility,” he said.
Mark Hilborn, vice president of logistics for PETCO, said company officials started to look for a new distribution site a year ago. The company opted for Braselton because of its quality workforce, he said.
“It’s the people that make this building function on a day-to-day basis,” Hilborn said.
GENCO Supply Chain Solutions, based in Pittsburg, Pa., will manage and staff PETCO’s Braselton facility. The distribution center will have 184 full-time employees.
“This is truly going to be a world-class facility,” said Herb Shear, chairman and CEO of GENCO.
