The growing controversy over its planned annexation of the Highway 316 commercial corridor near Highway 81 has not caused the Winder City Council to retreat. At a meeting Tuesday night, the council unanimously approved five annexations, extended for seven months its contract with the business broker spearheading the initiative, and gave initial approval to a code amendment regarding the public notice signs posted on properties being annexed. The annexations not only will bring 79 additional acres into the city, but they also will also extend the city’s boundary to Exchange Boulevard, which is the site of the Gateway of University Parkway on the north side of Highway 316.

So what is Winders plan for fire protection on these newly annexed properties? Do they expect Barrow Fire to continue on providing service on property that is now in the city? Looks like we are going to find out if the new Commissioner is all talk or will she take a stand.

Again, I find it funny that business leaders are working hard to get out from under the county's thumb via annexation into yet another Municipality. Just search "annexation" to see how much money has run from the county... Could it be the County with its ever expanding regulation and taxation to fund its own interest is a bad place for commerce?

I'm a business owner in the county, and not close to the area being annexed but would relocate to Barrow Crossing if it was in Winder or Bethlehem. I'm looking at L'ville now to relocate. I really despise Barrow County Goverment.

I've ALREADY taken my business out of Barrow County! The best part -- I'm getting ready to expand AGAIN.

Now if I can just sale my house. 1 down the road got asking price, so it's possible

There is no real " controversy " about any of this except that the local gossip sheet says its controversial and is trying to whip up public sentiment in an effort to sell more fish wrappers.
Why doesn't the barrow journal take their controversy stirring business plan somewhere else? Most here are tired of it already.

If they were fleeing to the city to get from under the county, Barrow Crossing would have never came into existence. Actually that comment makes no sense. Lets compare and see if your right, Bojangles(city) chik fil a (county) 1=1 wal mart(county) Dollartree(city) well im out of comparisons all of the rest went outside the city and stayed in the county. Yeah im pretty much lost on this power grab.

Yet another robbing Peter to pay Paul. Winder's never been able to afford a single Ambulance in our city, but we can afford to pay for new fire and police services once we annex? I suppose the grass is just greener on the other side. Makes you wonder where our tax money goes if the the city starts trying to claim business taxes outside the city. How about taking care of what we have? How about that?

Ambulance Service is not provided by the City Governments, Not Allowed, Licenced at County Level by the State, Has NOTHING to due with affording it. EMS is technically separtate from Fire.

Another thing, While we are at this: WINDER FIRE ran COUNTY CALLS for DECADES, DECADES going outside the City to Serve Barrow Citizens, When Barrow had Little... NOW Barrow has, and they show how petty our County Govt can be, TAKE for DECADES, Give Back?--Not a Chance. I personally was in a Car Accident in AUBURN and WINDER FIRE was FIRST, FIRST on the Scene.

The question is still there, why? What's better? Heres what I got so far---better fire service- well if they want the county to provide= same thing you got now.. Better police- I see plenty of deputies around Barrow Crossing and the area is what it's titled, a crossing I find that a weak argument. I would see the point if the current limits of winder were maxed with business and was a haven for business but it's the opposite. If you want Barrow Crossing to resemble Holly Hill Mall then I say annex, if you want growth you know which way that needs to go.

First of all Holly Hill Mall was nice back in the day but was cheaply built 40 years ago and let go, and lived it's useable life and needs to be retired and rebuilt. After all look at the communities around it. About the services, I think the city should go ahead and annex towards Bethlehem and Merge Winder with Barrow services that way since Winder can repond faster they can both partner to provide better services to the community. Giving us the care and Law enforcement we need fast is important. It might even save some tax dollars beside what we might use for more units and facilities due to expansion.

Mr Moore, your comments here should explain to you why I as a voter in Barrow County, (and knows it's history) would NOT Elect You to our County Commission. You would NEVER be able to work with our local governments, your OWN OPINION of our Cities and personal choices would Dominate your decisions. You have a fixed & closed point of view, your way is the only "correct" way or view. You choose to live way out in the County, great for you. We have choices, and OUR CHOICE maybe to annex into a smaller unit of government, that is more responsive and provides to our needs/wants better than in the Unincorportated County. I personally like having 2 levels of Representives, but I don't have but minimal(or no)duplication of services. I elect the Sheriff, but I chose to place some my property inside the City and have City Fire response, Police response (smaller area/quicker) and lower insurance, street lights and better access to Mayor/Council then my attempts to work with the Co.Commission. We can debate you continuously, but I wont. You show us that YOU CANT work TOGETHER with our CITIES, You would waste our TAX MONEY fighting what THE PEOPLE WANT due to your personal Views. Think about that J.B.
Annexing Barrow Crossing will not turn the clock forward 45 years, time will. Things age, TOWNS need to grow too. They didnt build it there because it was outside the city, 316 would have gone thru the City but for the State Park and the Recreation Fields we wanted to retain for the Youth and Citizens of Winder AND Barrow County, so the path was moved below the park.

You are absolutely correct we would disagree and you are one who desires more govt. and desires the govt to provide things for you, you have a right to that if you desire. I believe in less government and the requirements of the constitution. Obviously you are not alone with a large part of our population in wanting the govt. to take care of you, I don't. I am a conservative and I believe in personal accountability. Again, if that is what you want that is your right, I only ask and maybe you don't understand because you like layers of govt.(as you state above) what is so great about annexation that it is worth giving up more personal freedoms to the govt? As for your assessment of how I would spend money I believe you are completely wrong, I can't spend money fighting that I wouldnt have. That money would be in the citizens pockets where it belongs. Maybe you won't get that either.

You are one of those tea-baggin hypocrites who loves the constitution except when you don't.

As in the Bill of Rights. Especially the 4th amendment and what sprang from that via the U.S. Supreme Court, viz., Gideon, Escobito and Miranda. Such stuff that you hate: the government has to pay for the defense of an indigent criminal defendant. Sometimes it runs into the millions, and that galls the neanderthals.

You keep on with the Less government, as the government employee you are. Do you believe in LESS YOU? You are getting Federal & State level government issues mixed in your head with Local Governement. We DO HAVE too much Big Government in Washington and somewhat under the Gold Dome, That has nothing to do with City annexation, but you cant seem to get that in your brain. There have been more new Cities created and Annexations in the last 6 years than in recent state history, because Citizens want responsive governement, not in-fighting and wasteful govenment. The City has Proven to be a better Steward of my money on alot of issues. I pay my taxes at all levels and annexing a shopping center has nothing to do with "wanting the govt to take care of you". I take care of myself, but I want a govt that will respond to my needs & concerns, resolve problems, I have that. You want to restrict others freedoms under the disgise of Conservatism, You see yourself as some conservative champion but you aren't. You pick out certain parts you like. I am gaining not giving up. Just like above and like it was said before, YOU live closer to another county than any of our cities, you cant annex and wouldnt, so, So what. This isnt YOUR Choice. Sorry you can't deal with it, I bet it's really just eating you up...

well now that the State property is Fort Yargo is in the mix, can Winder legally annex all around this area?????

Fort Yargo has been within the City Limits for Years, maybe Decades. They already had people in the City Limits BELOW the park for YEARS too.

Are you kidding me? Let's go to school now. The Sheriff is a constitutional officer and is required to serve in roles as chief jailer, court security, civil process as well as general law enforcement. Law Enforcements purpose is to protect those whom their rights are being infringed upon. What freedom am I wanting to restrict? Please all the post are here, I have read the constitution and see no "the right to annex shall not be infringed". Again who ever wants more govt. go ahead and live in a society of people who want to be cared for by some govt. entity. You said you like it for street lights etc. I called Jackson emc and pay for the light above my barn and driveway when I wanted lights and my headlights work just fine on the roadway.if you want to be dependent on govt. then have at it, my only issue is the fact that people want to Praise the fire and police service as the reason, and then want county services continued. If you want it then you pay for, pure and simple. By the way are the military just govt employees to you also? I have spent my whole adult life serving and defending others rights, what have you done for your community and country?
