With Tuesday’s official election of the next chairperson and three members of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, the pursuit of the person to fill a position approved by voters a year ago will now begin in earnest. Barrow County Human Resources director Charlie Felts said the pool of top candidates for the new county manager is now down to three, after a potential candidate recently withdrew his name from consideration. All three of the top candidates have college degrees and have worked for years at other county governments. At least one also has worked for a municipal government, but his primary job experience has been with a county government. None of the candidates is from the local area, but all three are from inside the state, Felts said. A search committee comprised mainly of sitting commissioners was formed several weeks ago, but the committee’s interviews of the finalists have been delayed until a background company operating through the Association of County Commissioners Georgia completes extensive checks of the three applicants’ educational, employment, credit and criminal backgrounds.
Those reports are due this week, and the interviews are supposed to start next week.
