BOE seeks to improve communication; Self-assessment focus is on relationship with superintendent, community

The Barrow County Board of Education plans to change how it evaluates its superintendent’s performance, according to documents released last week. Responding to an open records request by the Barrow Journal, the BOE released a copy of its self-evaluation, which had been done at a recent board meeting behind closed doors. Although the document covers a number of topics, adjusting the board’s relationship with the superintendent and improving the system’s overall communications with the public were clearly on the board’s mind in the self-assessment process.

Well improving communication with the community and primary stakeholders would be a step in the right direction. One tenant of good communication is transparency. The BOE has demonstrated on several occasions it lacks the collective guts to own problems and admit that change is needed. When self interest of the elected supersedes the interest of the constituency more needs to change than how this elected group evaluates itself. What matters most is how the community evaluates their performance and I think that rang through loud and clear in the recent poll.

You tricked me, Good News! I thought your moniker meant the announcement that Dr. Creel was leaving was forthcoming! You mention the need for transparency--that is one characteristic that is a completely foreign concept to this superintendent and apparently we know now of this BOE. Everything is smoke and mirrors--nothing Dr. Creel says can be trusted. And as we have all seen time after time her decisions are knee jerk and reactionary. The BOE's decision is a simple although painful one--BUY HER OUT. There will be no progress in Barrow County until she is gone. Growth and innovation cannot take place in a climate of fear, retribution, threats, and intimidation--and this is the toxic environment Dr. Creel has birthed in her short tenure here. Just ask any educator in this county and he/she will provide an almost identical litany of the woes facing the schools individually and the district corporately.

Better ask those Educators under condition of anonymity.

Creel has a strong propensity for revenge when people are critical of her performance.

The superintendent does have a tendency to lash out at people she feels do not support her and those who do not bow down to her. She also likes to cast aspersions about people. I remember being taught now to throw rocks when you live in a glass house. People could go looking into living arrangements of district leadership or even relationships back in Coweta County. I also hear the food is good at Red Lobster in Athens but the atmosphere is lacking.

BOE Assessor, this is perhaps the best post I've seen on here in some time. Accurate to a 'T' and very well written. As an educator in this school system, I used the same term - "smoke and mirrors" - tonight when discussing the many problems that this system is facing. I've taught for nearly 20 years and I have never seen such low morale. You said it best, BOE Assessor, when you described the climate as one full of fear, retribution, threats, and intimidation. How did we get to this point? I'll tell you how. We have 6 members on the BOE who simply do not listen to (or care about) what their constituents want. Voters, quit complaining and VOTE THEM OUT! They refuse to operate under a system of transparency? Then VOTE THEM OUT! They simply are not worthy to represent the people of this county. Parents, please get involved by attending BOE meetings. Know what is going on. Don't just flood the meetings when something is wrong, like the bus issue. Finally, please don't always blame the teachers for everything that goes wrong. Much of what goes wrong (not all, but much) starts with indecisive, downright incompetent, overpaid leaders at the PDC and we are stuck trying to fix the problem.

I agree with everything that has been stated, but after a while you get tired of complaining. Nothing that happens surprises anymore! BOE Assessor stated if perfect, but what makes sense is not what the BOE is about.

Poor BCSS - Thanks BOE, you continue to fail.

Wanda Creel is bad for Barrow County. She has her own personal agenda. She is tearing down a system that took decades to build,using threats and intimidation to pursue her own interests. BOE, get rid of her or the good people of Barrow will get rid of you. We still have the power of the VOTE!
