Five months after receiving public accolades for his role in reducing the number of drunk drivers on the city’s streets, Winder police officer Brent Davis is off the force. Chief Dennis Dorsey said the eight-year veteran of the Winder Police Department was allowed to resign Sept. 18 in lieu of termination following an internal investigation of a citizen’s complaint.
For the full story, see the Oct. 24 issue of the Barrow Journal.

Mike, is it possible for you to dig a little deeper, i.e. see if there 'might be' other internal investigations against this officer?
I would have answered you sooner, but it has taken me 48 hours to sort through my list of things they could do to improve. Let me start by saying that WPD has some fantastic officers who work their tails off. In fact, most of them are dedicated, genuinely caring officers. That being said, WPD needs to put an end to the Good Ole Boy cronyism that is rampant in the department. Certain supervisors need to start pulling their weight. I'm just going to leave it at that for now.
Did he make a serious misjudgement in this case? Sounds like he did. That's were being young and cocky come into play.
Should he have been fired or in this case forced to resign? I've seen cops do worse and get their hand slapped. Case in point, my neighbor, has had numerous complaints filed against him and he laughs about it. He's WELL KNOWN to IA
I imagine Davis pissed off a lot of people with his DUI stops because he didn't play favorites. A drunk was a drunk no matter who you thought you were, or what "special" privileges you thought you had. Had a lot of people were "gunning" for him.
start repecting RIGHTS of drivers.
lead by EXAMPLE.
dont hot rod around
dont show up and accept free food and drinks from stores, this creates a feeling of obligation that if stores are not able to give police of Govt workers freebies they wont get same protection or if there is incident between two or more stores the Govt worker may show favor to the one giving them free stuff....
sorry but taking free things is wrong if thefree things are given becauseyou work for Govt.....

I am going to comment on each accusation or " perceptio" you stated above. you have stated NO facts, just comments on what you "think" or perceive to think is going on.
First- There has always been this long standing rumor that officers have quota's or certain number of tickets that have to be writen, this rumor is FALSE, and anything I comment about can ne proven, just contact the Dept of Justice and see how many departments have been investigated for this practice and/or shut down. Not only that, lets just say this was in fact TRUE practice, yall should be happy, because the revenue DOES NOT go to the police dept it goes into General Fund, meaning, more money in general fund, less costs on citizens, lower taxes etc, anyway. NO QUOTA'S, NO REVENUE BUILDING THROUGH TICKET WRITING!!
Respecting rights of drivers- I couldnt agree more, we as officers , yes I am an officer in a surrounding county, do have an obligation to citizens we come into contact with. However, lets turn this around you claim this officer or officers in general are not "respecting drivers rights" how about the drivers respecting the laws, then you wouldnt have a reason to have contact with Law Enforcement and not have to worry about anything stated above. Officer Davis ONLY job duties were traffic enforcement under the GOHS grant, thats it, so yes he had to justify his position by being out on the streets of Winder enforcing traffic laws. This is the differant from the regular patrol officers who answer calls for service, alarms, domestic disputes etc, He was traffic enforcement and its always the officer who stop cars and give tickets who are the bad ones or who get the bad name, bottom line, start wearing your seatbelt, stop speeding, etc. "Lead by Example", my favorite one, All I have to say is, even thought the child was only six, was this really the way a mother shout be acting in front of a Police Officer. Something tells me that if this child was 14, 15 years of age, she still would have acted in this manner, so "lead by example" doesnt not apply to this incident, your just showing your child that it is ok the disrespect the laws and officers, yet children are taught to call 911 when need help, why would this child EVER call 911 after this incident, this incident that could have been over and done if she just signed the citation, she had a court date to argue her case, she chose the hard way, and gave Davis not choice. "Dont hot rod around" Dont have a clue what you mean about this, so moving on.
Getting free drinks/food- I will only speak for me and my department when saying this, When we are offered free anything, we offer to pay, if they dont take it, I just leave it on counter and have them do what they want with it. Lets just say that I did get things free, So what, is there a problem with that when you really think about it? Officers presence at establishments may just stop a robbery from happening, bring more business if in a questionable area of town, officer being there may being more customers just bu them feeling safe. There are, or can be many reasons why they give officers things for free, it all boils down to jealousy, get over it, we put our lives on the line and are targets everywhere we go, we have to wear bullet proof vest and carry guns, yet get paid nowhere near what we are worth. I am in NOW WAY compaining about my job, I love it and would do nothing else, but really, does it bother you that much that officers may get a free drink or meal every know and then, of so, this tells me you really have nothing better to do then complain and wanted to put your two cents in on this subject. You showed no facts that proved your accusations, so no merit should be taken with your post, I wonder though, if you got a ticket from Officer Davis, knew another officer in Winder who was a good friend, would you not call to try and get the ticket dropped? May want to think about "getting free things", why would it be fair for you to get out of a ticket and everyone else have to pay for the same ticket. Interesting thought I figured I would leave you with, of course I am sure you will deny doing that. Anyway, figured I would try to open your eyes a bit on rumors and perceptions of the police, yes are there bad officers in departments, absolutely, are there bad doctors, lawyers, accountants, politicians, yep, Does that mean they ALL are? Lets not stereotype ALL officers because of few bad ones. Understand, this is by NO MEANS AT ALL saying Officer Davis was a bad officer, I liked Davis and thought and did an AWESOME job enforcing traffic, he may have saved your lives at one point and you never realized it. That one car he had stopped that was drunk and you passed him while he was on side of road, probably thinking bad things about Davis, that car he had stopped could have been the same car that ran the next redlight you came through, hit you and either injure or worse kill you or someone you loved, How about thanking the next officer you see instead of chastizing us!!
so the Gas station or restraunt that can not afford to BRIBE you wont get equal protection.
if I dont break the law I wont be stoppedbypolice??
REALLY HOW MANY TIMES have you or your partners stopped people for a burnt out taillight or headlight. then asked questions like where you going, coming from ETC??
it is none of your business!!! and one more thing Police officers are working for insurance companies under the threat of loss of property and freedom if one doesnt have insurance... now before the law mandateing insurance the insurance companies said it would help lowwer cost, protect folks... the truth costs have never gone down.. now insurance companies have ENFORCERS making sure folks either buy a policy most times worthless or face loss of property of freedom.. unless of course they wn five or more cars... then the law does not apply to them.... just saying dont claim you are serving the motorist more then being a enforcer for private business that hoodwinked us into this shame of mandatory auto insurance.. by the way what happens when a TN Wisconsin AL driver gets stopped with no insurance??? hmmmm nothing, as it should be here for everyone. oh by the way you can be from any state driving in GA and not have insurance as long as your not in your state GA peace officer can not enforce other states insurance laws or lack thereof.....
On a few of you comments I could understand.
To take something from a store without a receipt is setting yourself up for a claim of not paying for it.
My observation is that law officers probably break as many traffic laws as the general public. Just watch for their rolling stops, driving in rain without headlights, turns on red light, speeding, etc.
You must be very young, not from around here, in denial, etc to think tickets are sometimes not written for revenue. In the past to mention a few, locally there was Auburn, Dacula, Bogart, and Statham that most remember. Then there was Ludowici that is well documented.
Then the penalties for the few corrupt ones that are ever prosecuted are minor compared to the general public. It is definitely true they protect their own.
There are a lot of good ones, but when convenient most are above the law.
What get me the most, is that he lied in court. If he will do that, then there no telling what he would have done in other situations. Winder should have fired him for it. But don't worry to much about him losing his job, Just a matter of time he will be working for Barrow County...
As for the blogger that's in law in enforcement, You have a badge, carry a gun, (an so do I, by the way, i scored a 98 at night qualifying), My father always said, when a man want do anything else, they will make a cop out of him. JUST SAYING.
DAVIS IS A NICE AND RESPECTFUL YOUNG MAN. IT IS SAD HOW GOOD WORKERS GET MISTREATED AND BASHED AND THE BAD GET PROMOTED AND PRAISED.
IT IS A LOSS FOR WPD.
OFFICER DAVIS IF YOU ARE READING ANY OF THESE COMMENTS, IGNORE THE NEGATIVE AND KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND KEEP MOVING FOWRWARD.
He stopped some lady who refused to sign the citation.
He, being within his rights, decided to take her to jail.
He took her cell phone out of her purse to call a neighbor to come and pick up her young (6yo) daughter, whom she had in the car.
The lady got pissed! She filed a complaint because Davis didn't have her permission to phone a friend. RU KIDDING ME? She would rather he took the little one to jail with her?
I guess then she would have been able to file a lawsuit rather than just a complaint.
And then I went on to say --- (I imagine Davis pissed off a lot of people with his DUI stops because he didn't play favorites. A drunk was a drunk no matter who you thought you were, or what "special" privileges you thought you had. Had a lot of people were "gunning" for him.)
And ALL you got out of that comment was he was young and cocky?
He IS young and he IS cocky, but that doesn't make him a bad /rouge cop -- never said it did.
What I DID say was he had a lot of people gunning for him because he treated all people the same no matter who you are.
now it seems the main reason to become law enforcement is to use the Govt equipment not for the Public but for the side jobs, for personal use...sorry but when you sell yourself once that makes you a persons for sale whether it be for a dime or ten million dollars a Whore is a whore.
