Sheriff’s Office attains state certification

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office joined the small percentage of sheriff’s offices in Georgia to achieve state certification through the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.
A formal ceremony was held Tuesday at the Barrow County Courthouse to acknowledge the accomplishment, which encompassed at least three years of preparation and a commitment from the nearly 195 men and women who work at the agency, Sheriff Jud Smith said.

The Sheriff was part of the Winder Police Department several years ago when it attained it's state certification. This is a big accomplishment for both agencies, but for Barrow to have 2 agencies certified is a Big Deal, It shows that both agencies are trying to be as professional as an agency can operate.

Why would a sheriff want a certification from a chief? A sheriff is elected a chief is not. Why is it a big deal?

The State certification program is run by the GA Association of Chief's of Police and they are the certification agency for all of the law enforcement agencies in the State. It is a very difficult and demanding program and we should all be very proud.

I understand who they are but what do they certify? What does getting this certification do? What doors does it open? What I dont understand is a sheriff is much higher up on the food chain than a cheif. I could understand a sheriffs group giving a chief an award. Not the other way around. I thought POST was the offical certifiying agency in Georgia.

I can't believe you are such an idiot. A sheriff has no control over a chief, and a chief has no control over a sheriff. The chiefs association is a professional organization that oversees the certification process, but it is endorced by the sheriffs association.

And yet more. Staff from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Department of Public Safety, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health, Georgia Technology Authority, Georgia National Guard, the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Military will operate the GISAC and will produce daily situation reports, special analyses, warnings and bulletins as necessary. $1,022,488 was recommended as the state's portion of a 50% federal match to construct the GISAC in amended FY 2002. $377,000 in matching funds is recommended in FY 2003 in the Department of Public Safety to equip the center. The Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety is currently serving as the Director of Homeland Security for the State of Georgia.

Well I guess there is nothing more to say. There it is from the website the US military will operate the GISCA. I hope you officers know you are commiting a felony your violating posse comitatus.So what do we the people do when the cops become a bunch of jack booted thugs? I guess barrow county police have picked their side. And your wrong about an elected sheriff not out ranking an appointed chief.
