The regular monthly meetings of the Winder City Council are this week on Monday and Tuesday. Both the Oct. 1 work session and the Oct. 2 voting session will start at 6 p.m. at the council chambers inside the Winder Community Center on East Athens Street. At Monday's work session the council will discuss a proposal to start allow hunting on undeveloped, city-owned property. The meeting packet includes documents showing a similar setup between Barrow County government’s and 21 local hunters on county-owned property at highways 53 and 316.
At Tuesday's voting session the council will vote on an agreement with the Federal Highway Administration for $1 million in Transportation Enhancement Activity Funds for the streetscape project in downtown Winder. The project will be bid out in November, with work expected to begin at least by early spring. The pedestrian-friendly landscaping, lighting and sidewalk improvements will be in addition to, and concurrent with, the Georgia Department of Transportation's upcoming replacement of North Broad Street.
Among the other voting items on Tuesday’s agenda are a proposal by police chief Dennis Dorsey to create a new rank of Major for his department and to recruit someone that has experience in the reorganization of a police department following major annexations. Dorsey said Monday that the reorganization is necessary to create a fourth city police district for serving the commercial area near highways 81 and 316 that Winder is in the process of annexing.
In addition to the regular meetings, the city council's Planning & Development Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the community center and will discuss the planned annexations.

The WPD needs leadership that he cannot or will not provide!!
But, that's good ol' boy politics for you.
Get back with me when you can name those 3 things......
Evidently, there are citizens who are willing to accept mediocrity in the police department not one that goes above and beyond to protect the citizens who pay their salaries!! or maybe you work for the P.D. or are related to the chief or one of his officers.
It's not just me who is dissatisfied with Dorsey and his department, but an ever growing population of citizens. Unfortunately, his job is answerable only to the mayor and city council, who we all know are just good ol' boys!
oh yeah, 1)AIDING IN TRAFFIC CONTROL,
2)INSURING THAT OUR STREETS ARE WELL LIT AND SAFE TO WALK DOWN AT NIGHT.
3)PROTECTING THE CITIZENS OF WINDER
I could go on and on but you only wanted 3!
You don't have to be P.O.S.T. certified (if you even know what that means) to see how poorly the Police Department is run or how inadequately trained the officers are!
As for wrapping your mind around my posting, it would appear you are content, with the status quo and nothing could open your eyes. I sincerely hope you never have a dire need for the police department's assistance.
job service.
protecting thier own....
oh you mean things like serving and protecting like noticing unlit unsafe areas and reporting them to other dept in the city... ueah your right that would go beyonf revenue creation.....
And you wonder why prosperity is starting to come back everywhere but the rotting center of barrow.
Traffic has always been horrible in Winder and always will be.
