It’s tough to pass on a free glass of wine — especially when it may ultimately boost the financial success of a fundraiser.
The Braselton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is planning its third annual wine tasting and auction on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., at the Braselton-Stover House.
For the past two years, Cork & Keg in Braselton has provided wine for the event, but charged the DDA to supply the wine. This year, Chateau Elan offered to provide wine free of charge to the DDA and bring its winemaker to the event.
But, the offer from Chateau Elan left authority members debating during its Sept. 13 meeting how to handle the situation. Chateau Elan also donates proceeds from its annual Vineyard Fest to the DDA.
“It’s kind of a no-brainer if one’s free and the other’s not,” said DDA member Robbie Bettis.
Authority member Clay Eubanks said Chateau Elan may want to be the exclusive wine provider at the DDA’s fundraiser.
“It’s a delicate situation because we’ve got someone that’s been the provider — although they charge us — and they make money off it for the past two years,” he said.
After considering several options with Chateau Elan, and Cork & Keg, the authority opted to accept Chateau Elan’s offer for the free wine and winemaker.
Just after that decision, town manager Jennifer Dees received a text message from Chateau Elan CEO and president Henk Evers saying the winery was open to having multiple vendors at the event.
The authority then agreed to speak to Cork & Keg about providing free-of-charge wine to the DDA for its fundraiser.
With the DDA not being charged to provide wine, the nonprofit group stands to improve its profit margin at the wine tasting and auction. Individual tickets will remain at $25 each, which includes a dinner buffet, wine tasting and auction. The DDA is also seeking sponsors.
Authority members further discussed keeping their costs the same as the previous years to host this year’s fundraiser.
For the auction, authority member Peggy Kriegel reported the Gwinnett Braves have donated four field box seats for the 2013 season. The authority also plans to sell raffle tickets for a cruise — a popular seller at last year’s event. The DDA members are seeking other donations for the live and silent auctions.
