At its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the Winder Downtown Development Authority will discuss two of the planned improvements to the new downtown park at the site of the former Granite Hotel.
DDA chairman Mike Rice said the authority will discuss one contractor’s price to add stucco material in order to level the stone wall that was left standing because it supports an adjoining business.
The other cost to be discussed is the cost of a bust of the late U.S. Sen. Richard Russell for whom the park has been named. Also on the agenda will be the removal from the boundaries of the downtown district an area of May Street that should not have been included in the district, Rice said.
The meeting is at 11 a.m. at the Winder Community Center.

No, I'm not refering to a drunk driver, I'm refering to the rippling asphalt throughout downtown Winder that brings back that old time feeling of hay rides in the fields. My understanding is that downtown roads have concrete below the asphalt of which causes these ripples during especially warm weather that heats the asphalt and allows it to spread out like peanut butter on hot toast. My concern is that this will not be addressed during repavement projects and a bandade of knew asphalt will be yet another temporary fix. Would it not be proper to tear up the asphalt and repour concrete on concrete to permently resolve this issue?. Does anyone know?

Yes, you are correct about concrete under the asphalt. The city of Winder received two $500,000 grants from Ga.DOT to insure that the repairs will alleviate future problems. GDOT plans to remove the asphalt and bring in pre-formed concrete sections for the repair of the highway.

A bust? I sincerely hope that we don't intend on such a prime piece of real estate remaining a park forever. Things may seem bleak now, but when the economy returns, I would hope Winder will look to sell the corner lot to a commercial developer for proper use, but I fear that we are setting up a future fight over that by personifying this spot unnecessarily.
