The renovation of Barrow County’s historic courthouse complex in downtown Winder will begin on Sept. 17. The Barrow County Board of Commissioners last week approved a $4.4 million contract with John W. Spratlin & Son to do the renovations to the 1914 courthouse, adjoining office building known as the courthouse annex, and the old jail. Of the three companies competing for the work, Spratlin, which is based in Lincoln, submitted the highest original bid. But the selection committee chose the company primarily due to its experience with historic courthouse renovations and reputation, and at a meeting Monday, about $200,000 in cost reductions were made. Project architect Ben Carter told the BOC that the changes involved several items that would not affect the quality of the project’s outcome.

The Spratlin company is just finishing the renovation of the Wilkes county courthouse in Washington. They have done an excellent job. For once Barrow county has made a good decision. I think citizens should be proud that the county wants to save an old building rather than tear it down.

It is a waste of taxpayers dollars. If it must be renovated, privatize it and turn it into a mini-mall for in town shopping to entice consumers into the downtown sector with shops of distinction. The fat cats have a new home already!

I LOVE that this project is getting off the ground! Taxpayers voted for the SPLOST funds for this several years back & the funds MUST be used for the courthouse project only. The courthouse was built in 1920 though & cost the county approximately $128,000 to build back then. It's a beautiful structure which we should be proud to keep & enhance.

The money can only be spent on the courthouse. The County screwed around for years & did nothing, now are scrambling to spend money to justify future splost. Total waste of money. In these tough times, why can't these old useless splost be resended and give back to the taxpayerss in a useful way. Why, pray thee tell why!

pERSONALLY , i THINK IT IS A WASTE OF TAXpayers money, LIKE THERE ISN'T something else they could find to use 4,4 million dollars on, the commisioners and mayor need to work on bringing more businesses to winder, we have far to many vacant building downtown winder might as well be a ghost town, i I feel if a building not going to be of use to a town then it should be torn down, this way the taxpayers don't have to pay taxes on vacant building , like the old jail, we have a new aldi but who has money to spend , they need to get companies to come here that will put people to work, glad we are finally gettting a dollar tree

Here we go again, everyone is fussing about redevelopment and bringing people back downtown yet people still are not happy when they finally do something. The old courthouse and the old jail looks much better then the old hospital with the exception of the new part, it will fit perfectly in that building, it will redevelop and fix up another historic building to preserve history and bring people downtown. In fact we need more office buildings as well as retail shops in downtown.
