The Barrow County E-911 Center is six weeks away from finalizing its consolidation of the Winder Police Department’s dispatching services.
Barrow County Emergency Services chief Dennis Merrifield said the county has hired three communications officers in addition to one who formerly worked for the city.
The county now is waiting for the city’s records-management software vendor to provide software to interface the county’s computer-aided dispatch system with the city’s records-management system.
The Barrow County Board of Commissioners approved the consolidation of dispatching services in mid March, with Winder officials agreeing to provide a total of $500,000 to cover for three years the pay and benefits of the four additional communications officers needed to handle Winder’s police calls.

This is a much more efficient system and should save a lot of tax dollars in the end. The next consolidation should be the fire departments.

This whole thing has been a big mess. The next thing that needs to happen is the purchase of equipment that actually works well enough so that when an officer is anywhere in the county, he/she can be reached.
