Hiring process stalled for county manager

Nine months after voters said they wanted to change Barrow County’s form of government, there still is no hiring committee or timetable in place to recruit the county manager who will be at the helm of the government’s day-to-day operations in January 2013. The county’s Human Resources Department advertised the position on May 3, and 48 people applied. But a selection committee has not been appointed to go through the applications of the 17 candidates who meet the qualifications for the job.

My inside source at commissioner's headquarters told me the plan is to give the money for the county manager to Queen Graham.

Their plan was to punish Yearwood. Now that he's not running for the Chair, they could care less if we have a County Mgr. or not. they'll wait to see if Graham will comply with their wishes, if not then you will see the position filled.

Even if the position were filled today, the selectee wouldn't officially take over before January 1, 2013. So, to make a long story short, there isn't a big rush. Now, if they don't move forward by the end of September, then I'll be concerned. While it would be nice to have someone on board prior to January, I am quite confident that Mr. Yearwood wouldn't permit anyone to look over this shoulder for any period of time. And I don't believe that Pat Graham wants to have anything to do with managing the day-to-day activities of the county, but I do believe she will bring stability and respect to the commission and to the county.

First of all, the full time chairman's position has been eliminated come January. So the commission has no choice but to hire someone to run the day to day affairs of the county.

Remember, Yearwood was totally against the county manager. The thinking with some on the commission is not have Yearwood sabatoge the selection process. It would make him happy if he could have input in hiring a failure...kind of like I told you so.

I agree that it would be best if Yearwood did not have input into the process of hiring a county manager. He does not need the chance to bastardize the selection. Look how well his input has turned out with other big decisions, like the Fire Chief and the Human Resources director positions. Barrow can do much better, and waiting until Pat is in office just makes good sense.
