At two meetings last week, a team of Barrow County officials inched its way toward a balanced budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. By going through every line item in the budget, staff from the county’s finance and human resources departments, along with a few members of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, managed to trim another $700,000 in proposed expenditures. However, with revenues expected to decline in FY2013, the funding gap — at least on paper — remains above $3 million. In addition to the shrinking property tax revenues, the county is facing the possible erosion of Local Option Sales Tax revenues for the next 10 years. County and municipal officials have been unable to come to an agreement for how those revenues should be divided, and that issue may be headed to court.

There is no "mess," except in the minds of chronic malcontents and johnny-come-latlies. A newspaper is ALWAYS going to make things sound dire & desperate. That's how they peddle their rag to try and increase circulation & readership for the purpose of selling advertising.

Please outline specifically how a $3 million gap in the county's budget proposal is somehow being exaggerated to build newspaper readership. The facts of the story are what they are.
