Despite a decent number of advance voters, turnout so far today for Barrow County's primaries has been below expectations. Ken Young, chairman of the Barrow County Republican Party, said he was surprised when he arrived at the Winder Community Center to vote during the lunch hour and there was hardly anyone else there.
"The lady said I had just missed a big bunch of people," Young said. "It's hard to tell. It seems to me like turnout may not be as high as we thought it would be."
Barrow County elections supervisor Monica Franklin confirmed Young's impression.
"It seems to be on the quiet side," she said. "It is not as busy as we had anticipated."
As of 1:30 p.m., the precincts were reporting turnouts of 74-310 voters. Each precinct has more than 2,000 registered voters.
The polls close at 7 p.m. If turnout remains low, it could have an impact beyond this county's borders, particularly in the regional T-SPLOST vote and in the race for the District 47 seat in the Georgia Senate.
Voters in Madison County, where incumbent Sen. Frank Ginn resides, are pouring into their polls, according to an elections official who described that county's turnout as "amazing."
"It's just been wide open today," she said. "I don't know what the difference is. It's going to be quite interesting to see the numbers come in tonight."
