Possible mail scam making the rounds

McIntyre said she hasn’t seen the letter, but her office has received four calls from concerned property owners in just the past two days. She said it is her understanding that the letters indicate they are coming from an entity in Washington D.C.

“We had one lady to call today. It’s the first time she bought a piece of property since her husband died, and he always handled everything, and it worried her,” McIntyre said.

Most warranty deeds are only a single page, though security deeds may be longer. The clerk’s office provides copies for 50 cents per page.

“If they want a certified copy, it is $2.50 for the first page and 50 cents for each additional page,” McIntyre said.

Sheriff Jud Smith said anyone receiving such a letter should ignore it until his investigators have an opportunity to check out the situation.

Once the facts are known, he said the sheriff’s office would post an announcement on its Facebook page and take other steps to alert the public.
