The 2008 SAT scores at Apalachee High School went up dramatically from the year before, from 934 to 991 on the traditional scoring total.
Scores at Winder-Barrow High School were flat, dropping one point to 990 this year from last year’s 991 total.
Both Barrow County High Schools were above the state average of 984 this year, but lagged the national average of 1017.
Barrow County schools use the SAT prep class from Kaplan Learning Services, said Claire Miller, assistant superintendent for curriculum.
“Barrow County schools is currently delivering the SAT preparatory course to students during the school day,” she said. “We are providing every high school student in Barrow county the opportunity to enroll in the SAT preparatory course at no cost to the parent or student.”

Principal David McGee of AHS said he was pleased with his school’s jump in scores.
“We are very pleased to see our SAT scores rise,” he said. “This is a reflection of the efforts from our classrooms by the students and teachers as well as the assistance from our guidance office.”
Of area high schools, the highest scores came from Mill Creek High School which had a composite of 1036 on the verbal and math sections.
